Player Outlook
After being acquired from the Astros in July of 2021 in exchange for reliever Yimi Garcia, Bryan De La Cruz quickly became a prominent figure in the Marlins' offensive makeup. He debuted for Miami two days after that trade, made the Opening Day roster in 2022, and jumped into a full-on everyday role in 2023. The more at-bats he takes, though, the more it seems his trajectory might have already reached a plateau. De La Cruz possess decent raw power and can pounce on pitches in his wheelhouse, but he has proven to be a mess on anything thrown to the outer-third of the plate. He has a .301 OBP in his last 268 major-league games, and his outfield defense is already starting to look dreadful at age 27. While he should again play a lot in an improving lineup, which perhaps gives him a safe floor, there's no need to chase De La Cruz in the same wayward fashion he chases sliders.

  • Marlins' Bryan De La Cruz: Power surge continues

De La Cruz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Cubs. Getting the start at DH and batting second, the 27-year-old took Jameson Taillon deep in the fourth inning for the Marlins' first run of the night. Unfortunately, they were already in a 7-0 hole at that point. De La Cruz has a seven-game hitting streak going, a stretch in which he's gone 10-for-29 (.345) with three of his four doubles on the season, three of his four homers and 10 of his 11 RBI. The power surge has boosted his slash line to .286/.294/.476 through 85 plate appearances.

De La Cruz has been one of the few bright spots for Miami in the early going, slashing .288/.296/.450 through 19 games with three homers, a steal, eight runs and 10 RBI, and he currently sports a six-game hitting streak and a five-game RBI streak.

  • Marlins' Bryan De La Cruz: Swipes first bag

De La Cruz went 1-for-4 with an RBI double, a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-3 win over San Francisco. De La Cruz got Miami on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI double off Jordan Hicks. The outfielder would then swipe third base, his first steal of the year, before scoring on a Jesus Sanchez groundout. De La Cruz isn't likely to offer much in terms of stolen bases -- he had just four steals in each of his previous two campaigns. Still, De La Cruz has been swinging a hot bat, hitting safely in five straight games, going 7-for-21 with a homer and eight RBI in that span.

The 27-year-old has had a solid start to the season, hitting safely in nine of 10 games and batting .273 (12-for-44) with a double, a solo home run and five total runs scored, but his 0:11 BB:K is a little jarring after he produced a 40:142 mark over 153 games in 2023.

De La Cruz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. The 26-year-old will face more competition for playing time in the outfield with Jazz Chisholm and Avisail Garcia recently returning from the injured list, though De La Cruz's solid body of work this season should keep his role fairly secure.

  • Marlins' Bryan De La Cruz: Possible waiver wire pickups

Bryan De La Cruz was a favorite sleeper of mine in the winter, with my favorite stat being that his xBA and xSLG last year (.287 and .498, respectively) compared favorably to those of Rafael Devers (.282 and .497). The Marlins' indecision over his role this spring dampened my enthusiasm, but they've ultimately come around to him as an everyday player, even batting him leadoff Tuesday. And he responded by going 3 for 4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI and two runs. In all, he's batting .393 (24 for 61) with five homers, two steals and a 1.176 OPS in his last 16 games, his strikeout rate dropping to 18.6 percent after being 31.8 percent previously. His xBA is 81st percentile and his xSLG is 53rd percentile -- not as good as last year, but good enough to take him seriously.
