Player Outlook
An oblique injury, suffered early in spring training, put Seiya Suzuki on the injured list to begin the 2023 season. He then endured some ups and downs in the first half, bottoming out with a .475 OPS in the month of June, before exploding for a .313/.372/.566 line and 13 home runs after the All-Star break. He finished with a 126 wRC+ for the season (100 is average). Pretty much everything was up for Suzuki across the board from his debut season in MLB after a storied career in his native Japan, with the exception being steals as his total fell to from nine to six even with more playing time and the rule changes benefitting stolen bases. While speed isn't a huge part of his game, there may still be some sleeper potential here if you believe in his second-half surge. Suzuki, now 29, projects to remain a near-everyday outfielder and middle-of-the-order presence under new Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

  • Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Likely to bat second

Suzuki is likely to begin the season batting second for the Cubs, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Suzuki hit second some in 2023 but spent most of the season batting fourth, fifth, or sixth. His 183 wRC+ from Aug. 1 on last season was the third-best mark in all of baseball and the Cubs are hoping Suzuki will be able to offer more consistent production in 2024. Suzuki is likely to be preceded in the lineup by Nico Hoerner and followed by Ian Happ and Cody Bellinger.

Suzuki went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Angels. The home run was Suzuki's first of the spring, though he's been solid with a .969 OPS across five Cactus League contests. Suzuki took a step forward in his second MLB season last year, boosting his production in virtually every category. The outfielder should be locked into a regular role for the Cubs in 2024 and has additional room for growth, making him an attractive fantasy option.

  • Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Possible waiver wire pickups

For the better part of two seasons now, we've been waiting for Suzuki to deliver numbers befitting his Statcast readings, namely the 80th percentile average exit velocity and 94th percentile max exit velocity. Well, it may finally be happening. After another 2-for-4 performance Wednesday, which included a double and three RBI, he's batting .355 (38 for 107) with eight home runs, two triples and 11 doubles since Aug. 1. Part of what made his underachievement so frustrating is that the strikeout rate was well under control, but even that's improved with him striking out just 16.4 percent of the time during this stretch. It doesn't mean he'll remain this hot to close out the season, but it does hopefully mean he's achieved a level of comfort in this league that will allow his skills to shine through. Even just as a hot-hand play, he needs to be rostered everywhere.
