Player Outlook
Cade Marlowe got his first taste of MLB action in 2023, and he got off to a strong start and was seeing regular playing time in the outfield after Jarred Kelenic broke a bone in his left foot. He struggled mightily to end his campaign with 15 strikeouts in his final 32 at-bats while hitting just .133 over his final dozen games. The contact issues were readily apparent, but there were plenty of flashes that suggest he can play at the highest level, however, as the outfielder showed off upper-echelon speed and walked in 12 percent of his plate appearances. Marlowe profiles more as a bench player with limited fantasy upside, but his speed and potential to get on at a solid clip would make him worthy of a look if he earns regular playing time at some point.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Sent down to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Marlowe to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Marlowe will probably be needed at some point, especially with the injury-prone Mitch Haniger slated for everyday left field duties. For now, though, he'll head to Tacoma, where he will play regularly.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Productive in Cactus League loss

Marlowe went 2-for-2 with an RBI single, a double, a stolen base and two runs in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the White Sox on Thursday. Marlowe was reasonably effective during his first taste of the majors last season, posting a .239/.330/.420 slash line with eight extra-base hits (three doubles, two triples, three home runs), 11 RBI and four stolen bases among his contributions. The 26-year-old, who's capable of slotting in across the outfield, had opened spring training in a brief 0-for-6 skid before Thursday's breakout.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Marlowe to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Marlowe will move off the Mariners' 28-man active roster to clear room for Jarred Kelenic (foot), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. While Kelenic had been sidelined since July 20 with the foot injury, Marlowe enjoyed about a month-long run as the Mariners' primary left fielder, but he had faded into more of a fourth- or fifth-outfielder role in recent weeks. Marlowe ends his first stint in the big leagues with a .239/.330/.420 slash line to go with three home runs, four stolen bases, 11 RBI and 14 runs over 100 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Sitting again Friday

Marlowe remains out of the lineup Friday versus the Royals. Marlowe got off to a terrific start when the Mariners first called him up from Triple-A Tacoma on July 20, but he has gone 4-for-33 (.121) with 15 strikeouts over his last 10 games. Dominic Canzone is playing left field for Seattle on Friday after Dylan Moore drew the start there in Wednesday's series finale against the White Sox.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Hits bench Wednesday

Marlowe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox. Dylan Moore will pick up a start in left field while Marlowe rests after going 1-for-9 with a walk, a stolen base and a run in the first two games of the series. The Mariners deployed Marlowe in center field in both of the past two games, but he'll return to a corner spot moving forward with Julio Rodriguez (illness) rejoining the lineup Wednesday.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Takes seat Sunday

Marlowe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Dominic Canzone will spell Marlowe in left field after the latter manned the position in six of the last seven contests for Seattle. Marlowe is maintaining a healthy .827 OPS since his July 20 call-up from Triple-A Tacoma and should be locked into a near-everyday role in the Seattle outfield at least until Jarred Kelenic (foot) makes his return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Not starting Tuesday

Marlowe is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at Kansas City, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Marlowe is 0-for-5 with a walk and four strikeouts over the past two games and will take a seat for Tuesday's contest. Dominic Canzone and Teoscar Hernandez will start in the corner outfield while Mike Ford serves as the designated hitter.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Busy night in Wednesday's win

Marlowe went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and two runs in a win over the Padres on Wednesday. Marlowe's multi-hit effort out of the No. 8 spot in the order was his third in the last six games, a torrid stretch where's posted a .389 average and 1.006 OPS across 20 plate appearances. The rookie's busy night Wednesday resulted in a 30-point boost in his season average to .308, and he's also now sporting an elite .977 OPS. Both figures are a byproduct of the above-average plate discipline the 26-year-old has impressively displayed during his first foray versus big-league arms, one that's also helped generate a 15.2 percent walk rate and modest 19.6 percent strikeout rate.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Belts game-winning grand slam

Marlowe went 2-for-4 with a grand slam Thursday in a 5-3 win against the Angels. Marlowe came up to the plate to face Angels closer Carlos Estevez with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning and Seattle down two runs. He began the at-bat by whiffing on two straight pitches before playing the hero by swatting a grand slam on a 99-mph fastball. It was the highlight so far in a strong start to Marlowe's MLB career. Though 35 plate appearances, he's slashing .333/.429/.667 with two homers, six RBI, six runs and two stolen bases. Thursday was the third multi-hit game of his MLB career.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Laces first career triple

Marlowe went 1-for-4 with a triple in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. The rookie enjoyed a career milestone in the form of his first big-league triple during a relatively quiet night for the Mariners offense overall. Marlowe has held his own against major-league arms over a small sample thus far, posting a .267/.421/.667 slash line across his first 19 plate appearances while lacing three of his first four major-league hits for extra bases.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Gets third straight start

Marlowe will start in left field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Twins. After going 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double, a walk, a stolen base and an additional run in Tuesday's 9-7 win, Marlowe will be rewarded with a third consecutive start in left field. While Jarred Kelenic (foot) is out indefinitely, the Mariners will likely give the lefty-hitting Marlowe a look as their primary option in left field, at least versus right-handed pitching.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Night of firsts Monday

Marlowe went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in an extra-inning loss to the Twins on Monday. The rookie drew his second start since his promotion Thursday from Triple-A Tacoma and recorded both his first big-league hit and stolen base. Marlowe figures to continue seeing relatively sporadic playing time during his time with the big-league club, although his stint could extend for several more weeks given Jarred Kelenic (foot) and AJ Pollock (hamstring) are slated for longer-than-minimum IL stays.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: On bench Friday

Marlowe is not in the lineup Friday versus the Blue Jays. Marlowe will take a seat after going 0-for-3 with a walk in his MLB debut Thursday versus the Twins. AJ Pollock, Julio Rodriguez and Dylan Moore will start across the outfield for the Mariners on Friday against Toronto.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Draws walk in debut

Marlowe, summoned from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, made his major-league debut and went 0-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's win over the Twins. The 26-year-old got the start in left field in place of Jarred Kelenic (foot), who's projected to have a multi-week stay on the injured list. Marlowe displayed an enticing combination of pop and speed with the Rainiers while slugging 30 extra-base hits and stealing 25 bases in 69 games, so he could offer strong fantasy returns if he sees steady playing time and proves a quick study at the major-league level.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Summoned to big leagues

Marlowe was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. It will be the first stint in the big leagues for Marlowe, who has slashed a pedestrian .255/.332/.461 this season with Tacoma but has 11 home runs and 25 stolen bases. The left-handed batter is starting in left field for the Mariners on Thursday and could see a decent amount of playing time there while Jarred Kelenic (foot) is on the shelf. He's someone worth speculating on in deeper formats.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Getting closer to playing in games

Marlowe (oblique) is getting closer to playing in games, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Marlowe has not been able to play this season while recovering from a right oblique strain suffered early in the Cactus League. The 25-year-old hit 23 homers while swiping 42 bases across 133 games between Triple-A Tacoma and Double-A Arkansas in 2022. Marlowe stands a good chance of making his MLB debut for the Mariners at some point before the 2023 season concludes.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Optioned to Triple-A

Marlowe (oblique) was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. Marlowe is on Seattle's 40-man roster but entered spring a long shot at best to claim an Opening Day roster spot. His mild right oblique strain has officially taken him out of contention. In 133 games across the two highest levels of the minors last season, Marlowe hit .289 with 23 home runs and 42 stolen bases, though just 13 of those games came at the Triple-A level.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Undergoing MRI on oblique

Marlowe will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the oblique injury which forced him from Thursday's game, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Marlowe is in the running for an Opening Day roster spot, but even a mild oblique strain would surely rule him out. The 25-year-old posted an .868 OPS with 23 homers and 42 steals over 133 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season but struck out at a 27.0 percent clip.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: More of a factor in OF mix?

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Wednesday that Marlowe could suddenly be more prominent in the team's outfield mix, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. This comes on the heels of the news that Taylor Trammell will be sidelined throughout all of spring training -- and likely part of April -- because of a fractured hamate bone in his right hand. Marlowe now has more of a path to an Opening Day roster spot, though Seattle might ultimately prefer that he plays regularly at Triple-A Tacoma rather than carrying him as a reserve outfielder. The 25-year-old showcased tremendous fantasy potential last summer in the minors, slashing .287/.377/.487 with 23 home runs and 42 stolen bases in 133 games between Double-A and Triple-A. He certainly belongs on watch lists no matter how this shakes out.

  • Mariners' Cade Marlowe: Added to 40-man roster

Marlowe was added to Seattle's 40-man roster Tuesday. The pressure will be on Marlowe to produce next season, as he turns 26 in June and has only played 14 games at Triple-A and zero games in the majors. He hit .289/.379/.489 with a 27 percent strikeout rate in 578 plate appearances at Double-A and Triple-A. Marlowe has decent speed and tallied 23 home runs and 42 steals on the year.
