Player Outlook
Brayan Bello exhibited some improvement in his first full season, but he still has work to do if he wants to be a front of the rotation starter. He improved his control, but it came at the expense of strikeouts. Bello has the raw stuff to be more dominant, but he's yet to establish a third pitch to complement his sinker and outstanding changeup. Not only was his swinging strike percentage below average, but his called strike percentage was well below average, resulting in one of the lowest CSW% among pitchers throwing at least 150 innings. Bello has the arsenal to improve both swinging and called strikes, he just needs to find the right sequencing. Bello should have a rotation spot locked up and won't have any innings restrictions. The cost to see if he can take the nest step shouldn't be prohibitive, but he's in the wrong division, with the wrong home park to use in a streaming capacity.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Strong spring finish

Bello allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings in Saturday's spring start against the Pirates. Bello hit the 91-pitch mark and finished his spring with a pair of strong outings following a shaky start. His spring ERA was at 6.75 after three starts, but Bello allowed two runs while striking out 12 over his final 10.1 innings. Next up for the 24-year-old righty is an Opening Day start, which will take place Thursday on the road in Seattle.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Named Opening Day starter

Bello has been named the Red Sox' Opening Day starter. He was the pick over Nick Pivetta, who will start the second game of the season. It's been an eventful month for Bello, who agreed to a six-year, $55 million contract extension earlier this month and who now garners the first Opening Day start of his career. The 24-year-old will take on the Mariners in Seattle on March 28.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Rough spring marches on

Bello allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over three innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Cardinals. Bello hit his goal for the day in throwing 65 pitches, but manager Alex Cora described the outing as "erratic" to Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 6.75 ERA over three Grapefruit League starts. One area of focus this spring is being better against lefties, who combined for an .883 OPS against him in 2023. To that end, he's implemented a cutter that should get in on their hands, and he's also sculpted a new four-seamer.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: In mix for Opening Day

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Bello is one of two starters being considered for Opening Day, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Nick Pivetta is also a candidate to start Boston's season opener in Seattle. Given that the Red Sox just inked Bello to a six-year contract extension, it makes sense that he's in line for a big role in 2024. Bello was the team's best starter for much of last season before tiring in September, when a sub-4.00 ERA ballooned to 4.24. In two Grapefruit League starts, the 24-year-old right-hander has allowed one run on five hits while striking out five over five innings.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Gets $55 million extension

Bello agreed to a six-year, $55 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Thursday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. The deal includes a $21 million club option for 2030. Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican relays that Bello will receive a $1 million signing bonus as part of the deal. Bello wasn't yet eligible for salary arbitration, but he's now under club control through what would have been his first year of free agency, and potentially a second year, if Boston exercises the club option. The 24-year-old had a solid first full season with the Red Sox in 2023, collecting a 4.24 ERA and 132:45 K:BB over 157 innings.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Mixed bag second time out

Bello allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two over three innings in Saturday's spring start against the Nationals. The right-hander also hit two batters. Bello, making his second Grapefruit League start, sandwiched two perfect innings around a funky second in which he walked a batter and plunked two others. He admitted to Ian Browne of MLB.com that his mechanics went awry during the second frame. Bello has allowed just one hit through two spring outings as he makes a bid to be Boston's Opening Day starter.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Breaks out slider

Bello threw his slider during a live batting practice session Thursday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Adding a slider was a point of emphasis for Bello during the winter. "I felt more comfortable with that pitch," Bello said. "I feel like I can throw it in any count. [Thursday] in live BP, I used it and felt really good about it. So it was a good offseason for that pitch." The slider could be a good third pitch to go with a filthy sinker and changeup. The right-hander said he also plans to use a four-seamer outside the zone to elicit chase. Additionally, the 24-year-old worked on his lower half and back during the offseason, hoping not to wear down over the course of the season. Bello hit a wall late in 2023, losing his final three starts, including the final two outings in which he allowed 13 runs over nine innings. That brought his overall record to 12-11 and swelled his ERA from 3.68 to 4.24.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Will use slider more often in '24

Bello said Saturday that he has been working on commanding his slider during the offseason and plans on making it a "significant part of his mix" this season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Bello was able to significantly improve his walk rate last season; however, he saw his K/9 drop from 8.6 in 2022 to 7.6 in 2023. The 24-year-old righty has developed a reputation as a groundball pitcher during his two seasons in the majors, relying mostly on his sinker and changeup. If Bello is able to successfully fine-tune his slider, he may be able to produce the strikeout totals necessary to join the next tier of fantasy starters.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Raked by Rays

Bello (12-11) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings as the Red Sox were downed 5-0 by the Rays. He struck out three. The Boston offense gave him no support, but Bello was far from sharp himself, tossing 62 of 100 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Josh Lowe in the second inning and Isaac Paredes in the sixth. The 24-year-old right-hander, whose last win came Sept. 10, wraps up his first full big-league campaign with a 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB through 157 innings, and he figures to be a big part of the team's rotation plans in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Stumbles in Texas

Bello (12-10) took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over three innings in a 15-5 loss against the Rangers. He struck out two. It was a brutal outing for Bello, who was tagged for a season-high eight runs. The Rangers did most of their damage in the second inning, scoring six runs on six hits, including a pair of homers. Coming into the day, Bello hadn't allowed more than three runs in his last six starts. His ERA is now up to 4.11 with a 1.32 WHIP and 129:43 K:BB across 27 starts (151 innings) this year. For whatever reason, Bello has struggled in day games: he sports a 6.94 ERA in 10 day games compared to a 2.80 ERA in 17 night starts. Bello will likely get one more turn in the rotation this season -- he's currently scheduled for a home matchup with the Rays early next week.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Strikes out seven in win

Bello (11-8) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Rays. Bello stumbled out of the gate, yielding three runs in the first frame, but settled in for a quality start and a win. He tied his season best by forcing 16 whiffs and his seven strikeouts were the most he's produced since Aug. 1. Over his last four outings, the 24-year-old righty has registered a 2.66 ERA, dropping his season mark to 3.61 through 137 frames. Bello's next outing is projected for a home matchup against the Orioles.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Falls to Houston

Bello (10-8) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Astros. He struck out two. After allowing just two runs over his previous two outings, Bello found himself down 2-0 early after surrendering back-to-back homers to Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez in the first inning. The 24-year-old Bello rebounded with three scoreless frames before the Astros added an unearned run in the fifth. Overall, the right-hander sports a 3.57 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 106:36 K:BB across 23 starts (131 innings) this season. Bello will look to get back in the win column in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Tampa Bay.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Notches 10th win

Bello (10-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on nine hits and three walks over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out four. The Red Sox gave Bello plenty of cushion in a 17-1 drubbing of the Astros, though he was impressive in his own right, allowing just one run for the third time in his last four starts. Bello lowered his ERA to 3.56 and also has a 1.28 WHIP and 104:34 K:BB across 22 starts (126.1 innings) this season. The 24-year-old right-hander will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled as a home rematch with Houston early next week.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Bounces back against Yankees

Bello (9-7) allowed one run on six hits and one walk over six innings Friday, picking up a win over the Yankees. He struck out four. Bello's teammates gifted him four runs in the top of the first inning before he threw a pitch and the young right-hander was on cruise control all night. He induced 10 swinging strikes on 98 pitches, with the only tally against him coming on a fielder's choice in the third. Bello has alternated good and bad starts in the second half as he has lacked the consistency he showed prior to the All-Star break, posting a 5.03 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB over his last 39.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Hit hard in loss

Bello (8-7) took the loss Saturday as the Red Sox fell 6-2 to the Tigers, giving up four runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. The right-hander got taken deep by Kerry Carpenter in the second inning and Eric Haase in the fifth, continuing a recent trend that has seen Bello serve up 10 homers in seven starts since the beginning of July. Over that stretch, he's been saddled with a 5.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB through 40.1 innings. Bello could have a tough time keeping the ball in the park in his next outing as well, which is likely to come next weekend in Yankee Stadium.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Yields one run

Bello allowed one run on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in Monday's win over Kansas City. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. Bello cruised through six shutout frames before the Royals finally broke up the shutout in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old had been shaky over his last few outings, coughing up 16 runs over his previous 22 innings. After Monday's strong performance, his season ERA dropped back down to 3.64 through 19 starts. Bello is projected to face the Tigers at home this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Starting Monday vs. Royals

Bello will start Monday at home against the Royals, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. He could have started Sunday on normal rest, but the Red Sox will use a pair of openers and primary pitchers, likely Nick Pivetta and Chris Murphy, for the final two games of the series against the Blue Jays. Bello has a 3.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 62.2 innings over his last 10 starts.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Escapes with win

Bello (8-6) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Mariners. Bello didn't have his best, but he received enough run support to pick up his first win in three outings. In that span, he's surrendered 13 runs over 16 innings, including five home runs. The right-hander has been better overall with a 3.79 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 89:28 K:BB through 102 innings over 18 starts this season. Bello could start on regular rest this weekend at home versus Toronto, though he could also be pushed back a day for a more favorable matchup versus the Royals if the Red Sox want to insert a bullpen day.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Tosses quality start Wednesday

Bello pitched six innings against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters in a no-decision. Bello got a few extra days between starts after going on paternity leave and flying home to the Dominican Republic last weekend. The right-hander was solid in his return, holding one of MLB's top offenses scoreless over five frames before surrendering a three-run homer to Ozzie Albies in the sixth. Bello completed that inning to collect his eighth quality start over his past nine outings, and he got off the hook for a loss thanks to a late Boston comeback. Bello has emerged as a rotation staple for the Red Sox this season, compiling a 3.66 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 82:26 K:BB over 96 frames while registering a 7-6 record.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Off paternity leave

The Red Sox reinstated Bello (personal) from the paternity list Tuesday, and he's scheduled to make his next turn through the rotation Wednesday against Atlanta at Fenway Park, MLB.com reports. Bello flew home to the Dominican Republic over the weekend to witness the birth of his child. The right-hander rejoined the Red Sox after spending the maximum three days away from the team and will be able to stay on turn in the rotation. He's been Boston's most consistent starter this season and sports a 3.60 ERA over 16 outings.
