The Royals placed Massey on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a low-back strain. Massey experienced lower-back tightness a little over a week ago and hadn't played in any Cactus League games since March 16, so his move to the IL to begin the season was fully expected. Per MLB.com, Massey has been limited to playing light catch since the injury cropped up, but the Royals still aren't anticipating his stay on the IL to be a lengthy one. He'll remain behind at the Royals' spring facility in Arizona to continue ramping back up and will first be eligible for activation April 4, though it may be a stretch for him to make it back by that date.... Royals' Michael Massey: IL stint expected
Manager Matt Quatraro said Saturday that he expects Massey (back) to begin the season on the injured list, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Lower-back problems have kept Massey out of action since Tuesday, and it appears Massey's absence will extend into the regular season after initially being seen as a day-to-day issue. An IL stint for Massey likely means more playing time at second base for Adam Frazier to begin the year, though Nick Loftin may fill in against left-handed starters.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Remains day-to-day
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Wednesday that Massey (back) had scans come back fine and is considered day-to-day, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's Cactus League lineup due to back tightness, and it appears the scans confirm that initial diagnosis. Massey is receiving treatment and doing some conditioning Wednesday, and it seems like he could be back on the field within the next few days.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Scratched with back tightness
Massey was scratched from the Royals' spring lineup Tuesday against the Giants due to lower-back tightness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Massey's removal seems to have been precautionary, though a better idea of the severity of Massey's injury should come once the team's trainers finish evaluating him. The 25-year-old has had a decent spring thus far, recording seven hits in 30 at-bats while hitting two homers and driving in five runs.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Faring well early in spring
Massey has gone 3-for-10 over four Cactus League games. After hitting .229 with a middling .655 OPS across 129 contests in 2023, this is a good start to the spring for Massey. The Royals had an active offseason, and the signing of Adam Frazier -- who is 0-for-6 over three spring games -- could have a negative impact on Massey's playing time, though Frazier can also be an option in the corner outfield. Utility man Nick Loftin could also poach some at-bats at the keystone, especially against left-handed pitchers, so Massey will need to continue his solid spring to avoid losing his spot.... Royals' Michael Massey: On bench Friday
Massey is not in the lineup Friday against the Yankees. Massey went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in Thursday's series finale against the Tigers, but he'll take a seat Friday with the Yankees sending left-hander Carlos Rodon to the bump. Matt Duffy is starting at second base and batting seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Hits two-run shot
Massey went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's loss against the Tigers. Massey jumped on a hanging sinker from Sawyer Gipson-Long in the top of the third inning and sent it into the stands in right field, putting the Royals up 3-0. He later added a single but was left stranded, giving him his sixth multi-hit game this month. The second baseman is now up to 15 home runs on the season, with five of them coming in September.... Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting versus lefty
Massey is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Tigers. Nick Loftin will play second base and bat sixth as tough left-hander Tarik Skubal toes the slab for Detroit. Massey has posted a weak .591 OPS in 87 plate appearances versus lefties this year.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Hits bench versus lefty

Royals' Michael Massey: Not in Tuesday's lineup
Massey is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians. Massey's bat has come alive in September with an .892 OPS and four homers in 13 games, but he'll receive a day off after going 0-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run Monday. Nick Loftin will man the keystone and bat sixth against Cleveland lefty Logan Allen.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting out first game
Massey is not in the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox. He'll likely be back out there for the second contest, but Massey will yield to Nick Loftin at second base for the afternoon tilt. Massey has just a .521 OPS over his last 14 games.... See More ... Massey went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's win over the White Sox. Royals' Michael Massey: Swipes bag Sunday
Massey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Cubs. Massey kicked things off with an RBI-single in the first inning and wound up stealing second before the frame concluded. The 25-year-old has posted three multi-hit efforts over his last seven games and has racked up five RBI over that span. Though his numbers aren't spectacular for the season, Massey has quietly been productive over the last month of games. Since July 21, he's hitting .275/.306/.500 with six homers, 19 RBI, 28 runs and a 5:12 BB:K. Massey has hit third in the lineup every day since Aug. 7, including three starts against same-handed pitchers.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Goes deep in win
Massey went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-5 win over the Phillies. Massey's long ball sparked a sixth-inning rally for the Royals. The second baseman is hitting .213 over 18 games since the All-Star break, but he's swatted five homers and three doubles among 13 hits in that span. For the season, he's at a .218/.276/.364 slash line with nine homers, five steals, 33 RBI and 23 runs scored through 83 contests. He hit third Friday, just the third time all year he's been in the top third of the order.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting versus lefty
Massey is out of the lineup for Monday's contest in Cleveland. The 25-year-old will begin this one on the bench as left-handed Logan Allen toes the rubber for the Guardians. Massey has actually fared better against lefties this season with a .673 OPS versus a .593 OPS against righties, but opportunities against southpaws have been few and far between.... See More ... Royals' Michael Massey: Homers Sunday
Massey went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Yankees. Massey now has three homers in his last three games after going 24 contests without a long ball. Even with his recent power surge, it's been a tough month at the plate for the 25-year-old Massey -- he's gone 9-for-46 with a .669 OPS in 14 games since the start of July. Overall, the 25-year-old second baseman is slashing .213/.267/.343 with seven homers, 29 RBI, 19 runs scored and three steals across 251 plate appearances this season.... See More ... See Less -
