  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Optioned to Triple-A

The Angels optioned Herget to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday. Herget had allowed one run in four innings while striking out six batters during spring training, but the Angels will send him back down to Triple-A for Opening Day. Herget posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 29 frames in the majors last season, and he could very well be one of the first arms promoted when the Angels' bullpen depth is tested during the season.

The save was his first of the year -- Carlos Estevez was presumably unavailable after having pitched both Saturday and Sunday. Herget has a 4.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB with five holds and two blown saves over 21.2 innings this season.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Optioned to Triple-A

The Angels optioned Herget to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday. After allowing three runs over the course of one inning in his appearance Wednesday against Texas, Herget will head back to Triple-A. Herget has a 2.25 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in the minors this season, so it's possible he returns to Los Angeles later this year if he produces similar numbers in Salt Lake. • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Notches another save Friday

Herget picked up a save against Texas on Friday, striking out two batters in a scoreless inning of work. Herget tossed nine of 12 pitches for strikes in the outing and fanned a pair for his ninth save. The right-hander has recorded three saves in the past four days and four since Sept. 20. Ryan Tepera has registered two saves in that span, but Herget looks to have a solid grip on the closer position for the remainder of this season and possibly into next.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Records seventh save

Herget picked up the save with a clean ninth inning in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Athletics. Herget entered the game with a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning and needed 14 pitches to retire the Athletics in order and record his seventh save of the season. In 10 September outings, Herbet has two saves and four holds while surrendering just one earned run over 12.1 innings. He should remain in the mix for high-leverage opportunities to close out the season.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Records sixth save

Herget allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. Herget took two blown saves and added three holds over his previous six outings. Interim manager Phil Nevin opted to give Herget another closing opportunity in a fairly safe spot with a three-run lead, and the 29-year-old right-hander got the job done. One of his blown saves in the aforementioned six-appearance span occurred when he allowed an inherited runner to score -- he's given up only one run in his last 8.2 innings. For the season, Herget owns a 2.42 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 59:15 K:BB while adding six saves, six holds and three blown saves in 63.1 innings.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Blown save Tuesday

Herget suffered a blown save after he pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing an inherited runner to score while giving up one hit and striking out a batter in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Tigers. He did not factor into the decision. Herget entered the game with one out in the eighth inning and runners on second and third base, ultimately giving up an RBI groundout to Javier Baez before getting Spencer Torkelson swinging to end the frame. The blown save was his second of the season and first in his last five save chances. Since the beginning of August, the right-hander has allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out 20 batters over 19 innings in 13 appearances. Herget has gone 5-for-7 on save opportunities this year and now owns a 2.60 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 54 punchouts over 55.1 innings in 38 appearances.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Secures fifth save

Herget walked two and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Yankees. Herget has picked up saves in each of his last three appearances, which makes him look like a slight favorite for closing duties in the Angels' committee. He made it interesting Wednesday with walks to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton before retiring the next three batters in order. Herget ends August having allowing just one run in 17 innings with an 18:6 K:BB. He's been effective with a 2.70 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 52:12 K:BB through 53.1 innings overall, adding five saves, three holds, a blown save and a 2-1 record through 36 appearances.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Nabs another save

Herget earned a save against the Yankees on Monday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter while allowing zero runs over two-thirds of an inning. Lefty Jose Quijada opened the ninth inning with the Angels clinging to a one-run lead, but he exited after retiring Anthony Rizzo for the first out. Herget came in and worked around a two-out single to close the contest and pick up his second save in the past three days. Quijada's last save came over two weeks ago, and Ryan Tepera hasn't saved a game since Aug. 8, so it's fair to assume that Herget has worked his way to the top of the committee. Through 10 appearances in August, he has given up only one earned run while registering a 16:4 K:BB over 16 innings.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Notches two-inning save

Herget picked up a save against Toronto on Saturday, striking out two batters in two perfect innings. Shohei Ohtani tossed seven splendid scoreless innings but needed relief after throwing 109 pitches. Herget came on and completed the shutout with two outstanding frames of his own. The right-hander didn't allow any baserunners and threw 15 of 24 pitches for strikes. Herget has completed at least two innings in four of his past five outings and has allowed only one run while posting a 10:3 K:BB over 9.2 frames during that stretch. He isn't typically the Angels' closer of choice, but with three saves on the campaign, Herget could get a few more chances to close down the stretch.

  • Angels' Jimmy Herget: Gets 10th-inning save

Herget pitched a clean 10th inning Friday to pick up the save against the Mariners. Herget had zero strikeouts and allowed zero baserunners. Jesse Chavez was used in a save situation in the ninth inning, but he gave up three runs. Meanwhile, Jose Quijada, who got a save earlier in the week, pitched the eighth inning and Ryan Tepera was unavailable. This looks like a full-blown committee for now after the Angels traded their previous closer, Raisel Iglesias, to Atlanta at the deadline.
