Player Outlook
For the second straight season, Jordan Montgomery began the year pitching for a team with playoff aspirations but was traded at the deadline to a team a team still in contention. Of course, last season ended with Montgomery celebrating a World Series win with the Rangers. Montgomery began the season recording a 3.42 ERA and 1.25 WHIP for the Cardinals, fanning 108 in 121 frames. After joining Texas, Montgomery posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP punching out 58 in 67.2 innings. His 21.4 percent strikeout rate is below average, but the southpaw is frugal with free passes and does a good job keeping the ball in the yard. Montgomery is durable, with his 94 starts over the past three seasons tied for sixth most in MLB. A low strikeout rate hurts Montgomery's fantasy appeal, but it also keeps his cost of acquisition affordable. There is always risk a pitcher of this ilk experiences some misfortune, but he has displayed the ability to buffer ratios in a rotisserie league format.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Set for season debut Friday

Montgomery will make his Diamondbacks debut Friday in San Francisco, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery was not sharp in his final tune-up start with Triple-A Reno on Saturday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He served up two home runs in the outing. Montgomery got his pitch count up to 71, though, and as long as he bounces back with no issues he'll join Arizona's rotation next week. It will be either Tommy Henry or Ryne Nelson bumped from the rotation when Montgomery returns, and Nelson stated his case to stay Saturday with six innings of one-run ball versus the Cardinals.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Makes debut for Reno

Montgomery allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings for Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Montgomery, who threw 60 pitches, made his debut in game action after signing with the Diamondbacks late in spring training. The goal was get through four innings and 65 pitches, so mission accomplished on both fronts for the left-hander. A normal five-day routine lines up Montgomery to throw again Friday (April 12) then next Wednesday (April 17). The pitcher earlier this spring targeted his Arizona debut for April 19, which falls outside the five-day routine, given his appearance Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Slated for Triple-A start Sunday

Montgomery is scheduled to make a start with Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery tossed three innings and 50 pitches in a simulated game Monday at the Diamondbacks' spring training facility and is ready to move on to an official game setting next. The left-hander has said he's aiming for April 19 as the date of his first start with the big club, which would point to one additional start in the minors after Sunday before he joins Arizona.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Officially signs, sent to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks announced Montgomery's one-year, $25 million contract Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Reno. The left-hander's deal also includes a vesting option for 2025 that's worth up to $25 million, depending on how many starts he makes this season. After being without a team for all of spring training, Montgomery will build up at Triple-A before making his Diamondbacks debut, which he said will likely come around April 19, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Reaches deal with Arizona

Montgomery agreed to terms on a one-year, $25 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Montgomery had been rumored to be in talks with the Yankees regarding a potential reunion, but he will instead join the Diamondbacks with only two days left before the start of the regular season. Adding the 31-year-old southpaw will provide the D-backs with insurance in their rotation with Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) set to miss the first several weeks of the year. Because Montgomery was without a team all offseason and therefore missed spring training, he will likely sit out the first couple of turns through the rotation but should be able to make his Diamondbacks debut within a few weeks. Montgomery's new deal also includes a vesting player option for 2025 if he starts at least 10 games this season.

  • Jordan Montgomery: In contact with Yankees

The Yankees have resumed contract discussions with Montgomery, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. After losing out on the Blake Snell sweepstakes, the Yankees remain in search of a starter to make up for the loss of Gerrit Cole (elbow), who is in line to miss the first several months of the season. There is reportedly still a gap between what Montgomery is asking for and what the Yankees are offering him, but the two sides may be pressured into reaching a deal quickly with roughly a week remaining before Opening Day.

  • Jordan Montgomery: Could sign short-term deal

Montgomery's agent Scott Boras told Bob Nightengale of USA Today on Monday that the left-hander is open to signing a short-term contract similar to Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger. Per Nightengale, Montgomery opened free agency looking for a long-term deal north of $170 million, but it appears he has softened on the idea of a short-term contract with Boras informing teams as much. A short-term deal with the same structure as Chapman and Bellinger would allow Montgomery to bet on himself for one season and re-enter the open market for 2025. He helped the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023 after posting a 3-1 record over six playoff games with a 2.90 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 31 innings.

Montgomery will start for the Rangers in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series versus the Rays on Tuesday. Montgomery has been the Rangers' best starter by a large margin since the trade deadline and with Max Scherzer (shoulder) injured and Nathan Eovaldi struggling he was a shoo-in to be tapped for the Game 1 start. The left-hander will be opposed by the Rays' Tyler Glasnow.
