Jones extended Colorado's lead to 4-2 with an RBI double in the third inning before launching a 414-foot home run off Paolo Espino in the fifth, his first of the year. The 25-year-old Jones had gotten off to a slow start this season -- he came into the day batting just .157 with a .481 OPS in 13 games after a breakout 2023 campaign in which he slashed .297/.389/.542 with 20 homers, 62 RBI and 20 stolen bases across 367 plate appearances.

Last year's breakout star for the Rockies had a bit of a bumpy beginning to 2024, striking out 12 times in his first seven games while batting .103 (3-for-29), but Jones roared to life in the team's home opener. The steal was his first of the campaign after he swiped 20 in 106 games last season.

It's been an ugly start to the season for Jones, who has gone just 2-for-24 at the plate with a 1:11 BB:K in his first six contests. He'll flip spots in the lineup Wednesday with Ryan McMahon, who has been elevated to the No. 3 position in the order. Jones' move down the lineup may only be a short-term demotion, as he could move back up once his bat begins to warm up.

  Jones said Sunday his right knee injury appears to be minor, and he should be good to go for Thursday's Opening Day matchup with the Diamondbacks, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old looked as though he might have suffered a more serious injury when he experienced some numbness in his foot after fouling a pitch off his knee Saturday, but he's just dealing with a bruise and should be considered day-to-day. Jones believes he could play in Monday's or Tuesday's exhibitions against the Brewers, but the Rockies may play it safe and hold him out until Thursday.

• Rockies' Nolan Jones: Exits with trainer

  Jones was removed from Saturday's Cactus League game against the Reds with an apparent knee injury, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Jones appeared to have fouled a ball off his right knee and wasn't able to put any weight on it immediately afterward. A trainer eventually helped him off the field and into the clubhouse, where the medical staff will take a closer look at him. The Rockies will likely offer more information in the near future, at which point an idea may emerge regarding how much time -- if any -- Jones will miss. The 25-year-old outfielder entered Saturday's game slashing .267/.340/.422 with four RBI across 50 plate appearances this spring.

  The real question is how Nolan Jones is available enough to qualify for this list still. The power has been there all along, but he's really showcased his speed of late with five stolen bases already this month. How do a .280 batting average, 28 home runs, 24 stolen bases, 90 RBI and 84 runs sound to you? That's Jones' 162-game pace, and you'd be lucky to get those numbers in Round 5 of next year's draft, much less off the waiver wire. I suppose you could criticize his 31.7 percent strikeout rate, but the boost he gets from playing half his games at Coors Field more than makes up for it. Incidentally, that's where he'll be spending all of this week.

The 25-year-old has now hit 14 homers on the year, five of which have come since Aug. 8. Since the All-Star break, Jones has produced a .280 batting average with nine homers, 28 RBI, 23 runs scored and three stolen bases over 143 at-bats in 41 games.

He's now collected at least three hits three times over 17 contests during a solid August during which he's slashing .311/.394/.557 with three homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs and a stolen base. Strikeouts have been a problem for Jones -- he's at a 33.2 percent strikeout rate over 256 plate appearances -- but he's nonetheless managed to post a strong .283/.363/.504 slash line.
