Jose Herrera unexpectedly won the backup catcher job in 2023 thanks to Carson Kelly starting the year on the IL with a forearm injury. It was the second consecutive season he suited up on Opening Day. Once Kelly returned in June, Herrera was on the Triple-A to MLB shuttle for rest of the season. He finished with 124 plate appearances, and his .557 OPS never threatened to usurp the starting gig from Gabriel Moreno. Herrera enters spring training as the top backup, but will have competition after the Diamondbacks signed Tucker Barnhart and gave him an invite to camp.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Loses out in roster battle

The Diamondbacks optioned Herrera to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Herrera's demotion signals that Tucker Barnhart has likely won the Diamondbacks' backup catching job. The 27-year-old Herrera should still be the first catcher in line for a call-up to the big-league roster if either Gabriel Moreno or Barnhart is forced to miss time at any point in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Sits Sunday, but serving as top catcher

Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins. Though he'll be on the bench for the series finale, Herrera appears to have moved ahead of Carson Kelly on the depth chart at catcher after being called up from Triple-A Reno on July 23 as a replacement for the injured Gabriel Moreno (shoulder). Herrera has started behind the dish in seven of the last 11 games but has mustered a lowly .296 OPS.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Exits after foul ball to helmet

Herrera was removed from Wednesday's 14-5 loss to the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth inning after taking a foul ball off his helmet while he was behind the plate, the Associated Press reports. Gabriel Moreno came off the bench to replace Herrera, who went 1-for-3 with a strikeout prior to departing. The Diamondbacks will presumably put Herrera through concussion tests before deciding whether he's available to stay on the active roster as a backup to Moreno or if the team will need to delve into the minor-league ranks to find a new No. 2 catcher.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Behind the dish

Herrera is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Diamondbacks in Wednesday's game against the Brewers. It's the fourth start of the season for the backup catcher. Herrera is off to a 4-for-10 start at the plate.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Swipes bag in win

Herrera went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 11-6 win over the Dodgers. Herrera, who made his third start in 10 games, got caught up in the Diamondbacks' aggressiveness on the base paths, as he had one of five successful thefts. He's not known for that behavior, and it was just Herrera's 10th steal over nine seasons in professional ball.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Grabs backup catcher job

Herrera will be on the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Carson Kelly's fractured forearm has cleared the path for Gabriel Moreno to open the 2023 season as the primary catcher in Arizona, and for Herrera to back him up. Herrera is considered a strong defender, but the 26-year-old batted just .189/.250/.207 over his first 47 major-league games in 2022.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Heads back to minors

Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Herrera owns a .457 OPS at the big-league level this season, so Arizona decided to send him down and replace him on the roster with Cooper Hummel. Herrera was working as the backup catcher behind Carson Kelly, and that role will now likely be filled by Daulton Varsho.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Stuck in No. 2 role

Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta. Herrera had started two of the Diamondbacks' previous three contests, but he's still the team's clear No. 2 catcher on the depth chart behind Carson Kelly, who re-enters the lineup for the series finale. Unless he enters Sunday's contest off the bench, Herrera will finish July with a .150/.261/.150 slash line.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Picks up third straight start

Herrera will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Reds. With the Diamondbacks deploying Daulton Varsho more frequently at designated hitter of late, Herrera has been able to pick up some extra work behind the plate. He'll be making his third consecutive start Monday, coming off a weekend series in Pittsburgh in which he went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. Though he looks like he'll play more frequently than most No. 2 catchers, Herrera brings more value on the defensive end than he provides with the bat.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Hitless Saturday

Herrera went 0-for-2 in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. Herrera made a second straight start at catcher, as Daulton Varsho (shoulder) was unavailable after getting hit by a pitch during Friday's contest. Varsho was in the original lineup Saturday but was then scratched. That suggests he's close to returning and Herrera's days as the primary catcher may end soon.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Placed on injured list

Herrera was placed on the injured list for an undisclosed reason Thursday. Since the Diamondbacks didn't provide a reason for placing Herrera on the IL, he's likely on the COVID-19 IL. Assuming that's the case, he'll be eligible to return as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols. Grayson Greiner's contract was selected Thursday to provide additional depth behind the dish.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Splitting work with Carson Kelly

Herrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Herrera will take a seat for the series finale, as No. 1 backstop Carson Kelly checks back into the Arizona lineup. Though Kelly remains atop the depth chart, his ongoing struggles at the dish have opened the door for Herrera to push for a larger share of the catching duties. Herrera and Kelly have now alternated turns behind the dish over the last seven games.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Contract selected by Arizona

Herrera's contract was selected from Triple-A Reno on Monday. Herrera advanced to the Triple-A level in 2021 for the first time in his career, and he slashed .244/.358/.394 with six home runs, 32 RBI and 23 runs across 58 games. He'll now be added to the 40-man roster to keep him in the organization during the offseason.
