We are not sure which is the bigger surprise with Jose Siri: the fact he stole fewer bases in 2023 with the new rules and more playing time than 2022 or his final homer total this past season. The Rays acquired Siri to be the replacement for Kiermaier's defense, and he mostly held up that part of the bargain. What they didn't know they were getting was someone who could hit 25 homers in a tougher home park than he had previously played in. Siri strikes out with the best of them on an annual basis with both whiff rates and strikeout rates in the bottom 10th percentile last season. He doubles down on that with an anemic walk rate which makes him a problem in both batting average as well as OBP leagues. Through two full seasons at the big league level, he has hit .205 on fastballs with a 33% whiff rate on those pitches and that is how the league will continue to pitch him. This is an 8th or 9th place hitter whose defense keeps him in the lineup.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Striking out at prolific rate

Siri went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Tuesday against the Angels. Siri stated that he wanted to be more aggressive on the basepaths this season, and he began the year by swiping six bags across his first nine games. However, that production has slowed considerably since, as he has attempted only one stolen base in his last nine contests while striking out 48.5 percent of the time. For the season, Siri has a 40.5 percent strikeout rate, which could create playing-time concerns once Josh Lowe (oblique) and Jonny DeLuca (hand) return.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Collects two steals in victory

Siri went 0-for-2 with two walks and two stolen bases in Saturday's 8-6 win against Colorado. Siri was unable to collect any hits in the contest, but he stole a pair of bases following a third-inning walk to finish with an impactful stat line. The fourth-year outfielder is up to six thefts on the campaign, which puts him in a tie for the major-league lead. The stolen bases are keeping Siri's fantasy value afloat despite the fact that he's slashing just .214/.389/.357 with one homer, two RBI and a 33.3 percent strikeout rate on the season.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Swipes fourth bag Friday

Siri went 0-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 10-7 loss to the Rockies. It was an impressive display of patience from Siri, who had just a 5.5 percent walk rate in 2023. The 28-year-old outfielder has started every game for the Rays so far in center field due to his elite defense, but he's added some fantasy value with his bat as well with a homer, four steals, two RBI, four runs and a .375 OBP. He's never stolen more than 14 bases in a big-league season, but if he keeps getting on base at an elevated rate, he'll have plenty of opportunity to shatter that mark.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Knocks first homer

Siri went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a double in Monday's loss to Texas. He was also hit by a pitch. Siri doubled in the third inning before launching a two-run shot in the seventh. It was his first multi-hit game of the year and he's now slashing .294/.400/.529 with two extra-base hits and three steals. However, he owns an unsightly 1:7 BB:K through 20 plate appearances.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Swipes two bags against Toronto

Siri went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Friday's 8-2 win over the Blue Jays. After leading off the sixth inning with a single, the 28-year-old center fielder promptly stole second and third before coming home on a Jose Caballero groundout. Siri only stole 12 bases on 15 attempts over 101 games last season but he's already 3-for-3 to kick off 2024, and his 98th percentile sprint speed gives him sky-high upside in the category if he gets on base often enough to use it.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Set to handle heavy workload

Siri will handle a heavy workload in center field to begin the season with both Jonny DeLuca (hand) and Josh Lowe (oblique) sidelined, Kristi Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Siri was already expected to start in center field, but DeLuca and Lowe were his primary backups at the position. With both sidelined, he should be in line for near-everyday at-bats. Siri has stated this spring that his goal is to be more aggressive on the basepaths, though he'll need to improve on his career .273 on-base percentage to provide standout production.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Wants to swipe 30 bags

Siri's goal is to steal 30 bases in 2024, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Siri noted that he focused on adding power to his game in 2023, and he posted a career-high 25 home runs across only 364 plate appearances. On the other hand, despite an overall increase in stolen bases across the league, Siri saw his total dip by two bags last season. He has elite speed (98th percentile on Statcast) but will need to improve on a career .273 on-base percentage to be a more consistent threat on the basepaths.

Siri (hand) is on the Rays' AL Wild Card Series roster and is starting in center field and batting eighth in Game 1 against the Rangers. • Rays' Jose Siri: Expected to be on WC roster

Siri (hand) is expected to be included on the Rays' AL Wild Card Series roster, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Siri has been on the shelf since mid-September with a hairline fracture in his right hand but proclaimed himself ready to go after taking batting practice at Tropicana Field on Monday. Tampa Bay is expected to concur with the outfielder's assessment and also seems likely to include him in Tuesday's lineup against left-hander Jordan Montgomery.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Takes BP

Siri (hand) took batting practice at Tropicana Field on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. • Rays' Jose Siri: Ready for baseball activities

Siri (hand) is scheduled to resume baseball activities Thursday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Siri suffered a hairline fracture in his right hand earlier this month when he was hit by a pitch, but he is aiming to be ready for the beginning of postseason play. The 28-year-old outfielder had registered a .761 OPS with 25 homers and 12 steals in 101 games for the Rays prior to landing on the injured list Sept. 12.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Diagnosed with hairline fracture

Siri is dealing with a hairline fracture in his right hand, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Florida reports. Siri was struck by a pitch during Monday's contest against the Twins, and further testing revealed a small fracture. According to Whitaker, the team is hopeful Siri won't miss more than a few weeks, but they will know more Tuesday. Either way, it seems like he will miss most or all of the rest of the regular season.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Leaves game after HBP

Siri exited Monday's game against the Twins after being hit by a pitch on the hand, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Siri stayed in the game to run the bases, but he was pulled shortly after. He appeared to be in serious pain immediately after being hit, per Whitaker. Vidal Brujan takes over the No. 5 spot in the order and is set to man right field, and Josh Lowe shifts to center in Siri's absence.

Siri went 2-for-4 with double, a triple, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Mariners. Siri started in center field Friday night after receiving a day off Thursday. His legs must have been feeling good after the rest, as the 28-year-old swiped his 12th base of the year. Siri is slashing .223/.267/.503 in 98 games this season.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Slugs 25th homer

Siri went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 7-6 loss to Cleveland. Siri went down on strikes in each of his first two trips to the plate before cranking a solo homer in the sixth to put the Rays on top 5-4. It was the center fielder's 25th long ball of the season and his first since Aug. 19 against the Angels. Siri is batting just .212 over his last 10 contests despite recording two multi-hit games over that stretch. He's also struck out at least one time in each contest during that 10-game span.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Out of lineup

Siri will sit Saturday against the Yankees, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Siri has been hot at the plate over his last 13 games, hitting .289/.325/.579 with three homers and three steals, though he does have 15 strikeouts alongside just one walk over that stretch. He'll hit the bench for the second time in three games, with Luke Raley starting in center field.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Tallies homer in return

Siri went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a walk in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Angels. Siri had missed two games with a sprained finger but returned to action to start in center field and hit eighth. He took Jaime Barria deep in the sixth frame to tally his 24th homer of the season and his fourth in his last 12 starts. Siri has an inflated 36.8 percent strikeout rate, yet he's still managed to greatly improve his power production while also swiping eight bags across 304 plate appearances.

As expected, Siri will make his return to the lineup after missing Friday's contest and Saturday's matinee with a sprained finger. The outfielder is batting .286 with two homers, two doubles, four RBI, three runs and a stolen base over his last seven games.

  • Rays' Jose Siri: Likely back for Game 2

Siri (finger) will not start Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Angels, but he will be available off the bench and is expected to start the nightcap, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Siri left Wednesday's game against the Giants with a sprained pinky finger and did not play Friday against the Angels following Thursday's scheduled off day, but the injury does not appear to be serious. He felt good after hitting in the cage Saturday and should be ready to go later in the day. Luke Raley will play shortstop in the afternoon contest.
