Cordero signed a contract Thursday with the Seibu Lions in Japan. The news was reported by Cordero's agency (Republik Sports) on Instagram. The 29-year-old outfielder never quite got it going at the MLB level, but he's always torn it up in the minors and his offensive profile could wind up translating well to Nippon Professional Baseball. Cordero leaves behind a career .678 major-league OPS.... See More ... See Less

Franchy Cordero: Becomes free agent
Cordero elected to become a free agent Monday. He'll head to free agency rather than accept the Yankees' outright assignment. Cordero has often teased at the major-league level with his raw skills but ultimately has just a .678 OPS over parts of seven seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Outrighted to Triple-A
The Yankees sent Cordero outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Cordero posted a .689 OPS through 71 plate appearances with the Yankees in 2023, though most of his time was spent in Triple-A, where he slashed .288/.403/.476 with 13 homers and 61 RBI. He'll have the option to elect free agency and would likely be able to attract a minor-league deal elsewhere.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Contributes homer in loss
Cordero went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs scored in a loss to the Angels on Monday. The Yankees watched Los Angeles jump out to a big lead early, but Cordero at least gave his team some life with his solo shot in the eighth inning that narrowed the deficit to three runs. The outfielder finished with three hits overall, more than he had tallied over his previous 33 at-bats combined. Cordero homered four times in his first seven games as a Yankee, but Wednesday's long ball was his first since that span. He's spent most of his time in the minors since finishing April in a 1-for-28 swoon.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Recalled from Triple-A
Cordero was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. He's presumably taking the roster spot soon to be vacated by Jake Bauers (shoulder), who is headed to the injured list. Cordero has batted only .148/.179/.389 over 56 plate appearances with the Yanks this season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Placed on 7-day IL
Cordero was placed on the 7-day injured list by Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. Cordero will sit for a week while recovering from the undisclosed injury. The outfielder has had a pair of stints with the Yankees in 2023, but he's struggled to a slash of .148/.179/.389 over 56 plate appearances in those opportunities.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Sent back to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Cordero to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Cordero struck out in his lone at-bat during this latest brief stint on the Yankees' major-league roster. He had a strong one-week run of power production in April but is batting just .148/.179/.389 across 56 total plate appearances this season in the big leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Recalled from Triple-A
Cordero was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Cordero is taking the place of Harrison Bader on the 26-man active roster after Bader was placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. Cordero could see starts in the outfield over the coming weeks, but he is more likely to be a bench option while with the club at this point.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Heads back to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Cordero to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. He had just been recalled Monday when Aaron Judge (hip) went on the injured list but is headed right back to SWB following Harrison Bader's (oblique) return. Cordero has four homers but a .578 OPS and 20:2 K:BB in 18 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Recalled from Triple-A
Cordero was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees on Monday. Cordero was just optioned this past Friday but is back now to replace the injured Aaron Judge (hip). He had been slumping badly before the demotion but could see some starts versus righties with the Yankees' outfield depth being tested.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Optioned to Triple-A
Cordero was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees on Friday. Cordero started off on fire for the Yankees after signing with the team just before the season, but the outfielder hasn't picked up a hit since April 14 and saw his average fall to .151 with another hitless affair against the Rangers on Friday. The Yankees will announce a corresponding move before Saturday's game versus Texas.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Sitting again Thursday
Cordero is not in the lineup Thursday versus the Rangers. Cordero did not start Wednesday with a right-hander on the mound for the Twins and he's sitting again Thursday with left-hander Andrew Heaney toeing the slab for Texas. The 28-year-old flourished over his first two weeks with the Yankees, but he is 0-for-18 with seven strikeouts and zero walks over his last eight games.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Sitting versus right-hander
Cordero is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Twins, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Cordero will get a breather as the Yankees face right-hander Kenta Maeda on the mound. Left-handed batter Willie Calhoun will draw the start in right field and bat sixth as New York looks to avoid the sweep against Minnesota.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Out against right-hander
Cordero is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. He'll be on the bench for the third time in four games, but unlike his prior two absences, the Yankees are opposing a right-handed starting pitcher (Kevin Gausman) on Sunday. The lefty-hitting Cordero's hold on a strong-side platoon role looks as though it may be loosening while he's fallen into a 1-for-18 rut at the dish over his last seven games.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Should play frequently vs. RHPs
Cordero will start in right field and bat ninth Wednesday versus the Angels, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. Cordero was on the bench for both of the Yankees' past two games, but so long as at least two of Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), Harrison Bader (oblique) and Josh Donaldson (hamstring) are on the injured list, the 28-year-old should have a fairly clear path to playing regularly versus right-handed pitching. Through 39 plate appearances this season, Cordero owns a robust .824 OPS, but a 30.8 percent strikeout rate has kept his batting average down at .216.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Shows no signs of slowing down
Cordero went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over Cleveland. Cordero got his fourth straight start and took advantage of the opportunity again, slugging a game-tying solo homer in the seventh inning. The long ball was his fourth in his past five contests and ensured that he has reached base in all seven games in which he has played in 2023. Cordero leads New York with 11 RBI and is tied with Aaron Judge for the team lead in homers despite logging just 27 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Swats three-run homer in rout
Cordero went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Tuesday's win over Cleveland. Cordero took Hunter Gaddis deep to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead over the Guardians. The outfielder has already socked three homers on the year and he's up to 10 RBI over six appearances and 21 at-bats. Cordero's strong start to 2023 gives him the opportunity to earn regular playing time with the Yankees as the season progresses, especially against right-handed pitchers.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Swinging hot bat
Cordero went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 5-3 win over the Orioles on Sunday. Cordero has played in just four games for New York this season, but he's made a big impact on offense. His two-run homer Sunday amounted to the winning margin and marked his second straight game with a long ball. Cordero has gotten at least one hit in each of the contests in which he has appeared and is tied for the team lead with seven RBI despite logging just 15 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Launches first homer of year
Cordero went 1-for-1 with a walk and a three-run home run in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Orioles. Getting the start in right field and batting eighth, Cordero got lifted for a pinch hitter against southpaw reliever Danny Coulombe in the sixth inning but did plenty of damage before he exited. Cordero's fourth-inning blast off Dean Kremer got the Yankees on the board and gave the 28-year-old outfielder his first homer of the season. He'll remain in a strict platoon role, but Cordero is looking good in pinstripes so far, batting .300 (3-for-10) with five RBI in three games.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Franchy Cordero: Drives in two runs in debut
Cordero went 1-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBI in Monday's 8-1 win against the Phillies. Cordero joined New York on a one-year split contract last Wednesday and saw his first action of the season Monday. He got the start in right field and knocked his first hit as a Yankee in the fifth inning, doubling to center field to plate two runs and later coming around to score. Cordero is likely to see only sporadic playing time in the majors, so he won't be a fantasy target unless injuries open up a wider path to playing time.... See More ... See Less
