Player Outlook
Jeimer Candelario has always packed latent power, but Comerica Park kept most of his fly balls in the yard. Last season, he signed with Washington and homers ensued, buoyed by power-friendly Nationals Park and Wrigley Field in the summertime. Before he was traded to the Cubs, Candelario clubbed 16 homers, fueling a .258/.342/.481 line. He fell a bit after, posting a .234/.318/.445 line, but added six more homers to set a new career high. Candelario's .471 slugging mark was the second highest of his career, only bettered by .503 in the pandemic season. His strikeout and walk rate have been in the same range for many years, with no sign of changing this year. Candelario's BABIP has been all over the place, ranging from .257 to .333 over the past six seasons, omitting the .372 mark recorded in the shortened 2020 season. He finds himself in his best home park to date after signing a three-year, $45 million deal with the Reds. His dual eligibility makes for a decent late cornerman, and while he may get more days off than a true everyday player, the switch hitter should be in the middle of the lineup most days and is a must-play at home.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Dropped in batting order

Candelario went 2-for-5 with two RBI, a run scored and was caught stealing in Sunday's 11-4 win over the White Sox. Candelario delivered his first multi-hit effort of the season, including a two-run single in the fourth inning. Another first for the infielder was his placement in the batting order; Candelario's first 13 starts were at cleanup, but a season-opening slump dropped him to seventh Sunday against a right-hander. It's unclear if the switch-hitting Candelario will also be dropped against left-handers. On Monday, the Reds kick off a three-game set against the Mariners, who have righties scheduled to start all three contests.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Returns to action

Candelario went 1-for-4 with a double and run scored in Saturday's 5-0 win over the White Sox. Candelario returned to action after being held out of Friday's game and was back in the leadoff spot despite a season-opening slump. He entered the game on a 1-for-16 run and without a hit in 10 straight at-bats.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Absent from Friday's lineup

Candelario is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox. Candelario is off to a dreadful 7-for-46 (.152) start at the plate this season, but this will be his first day off. The Reds will roll with Santiago Espinal at third base in Chicago.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Average plummets

Candelario went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Brewers. Candelario has one hit over the last 18 at-bats, dropping his average to .152 and OPS to .535 for the season. Those are unbecoming numbers for a cleanup hitter. He's part of a big hole in the middle of the Reds' order along with third place batter Christian Encarnacion-Strand (.154/.417). The slump is causing Candelario to chase more than normal; he's swinging at a career-high 36 percent of offerings outside the zone.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Plays field Saturday

Candelario started at third base and went 1-for-3 with a walk, double and run scored in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Mets. Candelario, who sustained a sore elbow Thursday, has not missed any time because of it. He started at designated hitter Friday then returned to the field Saturday. Candelario's batting just .200 through 30 at-bats, but he's hit safely in six of eight games played.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Back in lineup Friday

Candelario (elbow) will be the designated hitter and bat cleanup in Friday's game versus the Mets. Candelario had to exit Wednesday's game with a hyperextended right elbow, but he won't wind up missing any starts. It is possible that the switch hitter will be limited to DH duties for a bit, however, in order to protect the elbow.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Dealing with hyperextended elbow

Manager David Bell said after Thursday's game against the Phillies that Candelario might just be dealing with a hyperextension of his right elbow, and the third baseman will be evaluated ahead of Friday's game against the Mets, according to Bally Sports Cincinnati. Candelario felt a stinger during a swing in his final at-bat Thursday. He hit a double on the next pitch but was replaced on defense as the team didn't want him aggravating the injury by throwing. Bell was optimistic the issue would be a minor one for Candelario.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Exits with apparent injury

Candelario was removed from Wednesday's game against the Phillies due to an injury, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Candelario appeared to wince and point at his right elbow after a swing during the top of eighth inning. He was able to finish the at-bat, resulting in a double, but he was replaced on defense when the Reds took the field in the bottom of the frame. Cincinnati's medical staff will take a closer look at him, and more information about his injury should be available after Wednesday's contest.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Position solidified

With Noelvi Marte serving an 80-game suspension to begin the season, Candelario will be the primary third baseman for the first three months of the season, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Reds manager David Bell repeatedly has stressed that Candelario will play a lot, but this just solidifies what position he'll play, instead of Candelario playing multiple positions to get his time. Jonathan India, Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand are all also capable of playing third in a pinch.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Co-starter at hot corner

Candelario is projected as a co-starter at third base along with Noelvi Marte (hamstring), Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Candelario, who signed a three-year contract during the offseason, is expected to play every day, whether that be at corner infield -- he has 79 career starts at first base -- or designated hitter. Marte, an elite prospect who was developed at shortstop, had a strong showing in 35 games for the Reds last season.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Will be everyday player

Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Candelario will be an everyday player in 2024, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Between DH, first base and third base, he's going to be an everyday player," Bell said of Candelario. The skipper will have plenty of mixing and matching to do with the Reds' abundance of infielders, which is going to lead to extra days off for some. It does not sound like Candelario will be one of those guys sitting with regularity, however. Cincinnati inked Candelario to a three-year, $45 million contract in December.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Deal with Cincinnati announced

The Reds signed Candelario on Monday to a three-year, $45 million contract that contains a club option for 2027, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Candelario and the Reds agreed in principle on the deal last week, but it wasn't until Monday that the team formally announced the signing of the 30-year-old. He's expected to move between the corner-infield spots and designated hitter in 2024, with his ability to hit from either side of the plate likely guaranteeing him steady playing time versus both left- and right-handed pitching. After posting a career-worst .633 OPS in his final season with the Tigers in 2022, Candelario bounced back nicely at the plate in 2023, slashing .251/.336/.471 with a career-high 22 home runs and eight stolen bases across 575 plate appearances between the Nationals and Cubs.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Headed to Cincinnati

Candelario signed a contract with the Reds on Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Adding Candelario is an interesting move for the Reds, who already have a plethora of young infield talent at the major-league level. Candelario slashed .251/.336/.471 with 22 homers and 70 RBI between the Nationals and Cubs last season. He's capable of playing either corner infield position -- though he has far more experience at third -- and his arrival could signal a potential plan for the Reds to move on from Christian Encarnacion-Strand or Noelvi Marte (hamstring).

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Goes deep Friday

Candelario went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Brewers. Candelario was reinstated from the injured list Wednesday after missing a few weeks with a back strain, and Friday's home run was his first hit since returning. He's been solid this year with an .807 OPS, 22 home runs and 38 doubles, and the Cubs will need the infielder to produce over their final two games if they want to sneak into the playoff field.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Back from injured list

Candelario (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will be in the lineup Wednesday against Atlanta, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The 29-year-old has been sidelined since Sept. 11 with a back strain but is ready to rejoin the Cubs for the final five games of the regular season. Candelario was mired in a 3-for-36 slump prior to landing on the injured list and will attempt to get back on track as Chicago competes for a wild-card spot.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Continuing baseball activities

Candelario (back) is continuing his progression through baseball activities Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Out since Sept. 12 due to a lower-back strain, Candelario was cleared to begin working out Friday and should be able to return to the Cubs' active roster at some point before the regular season comes to an end this Sunday. He could even be activated as early as Wednesday, per Montemurro. Miles Mastrobuoni has been receiving the majority of the playing time at third base in Candelario's absence, with Cody Bellinger largely playing first base.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Resumes baseball activity

Candelario (back) resumed baseball activities Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Candelario is already eligible to return from the injured list after suffering a lower-back strain in mid-September. He had slumped to a .083/.227/.278 line in the 13 games prior to hitting the injured list, however, so the Cubs will want to make sure he's right before activating him.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Could return next week

Manager David Ross expressed optimism Tuesday that Candelario (back) could return next week, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. Candelario has been sidelined for over a week now due to a lower-back strain, but it sounds like he is making some semblance of progress with his side work. The 29-year-old corner infielder had registered a .773 OPS with five homers and two steals through 36 games for Chicago prior to landing on the injured list.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Placed on 10-day IL

The Cubs placed Candelario on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Candelario suffered the injury in Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks and will be sidelined until at least a week from Thursday. Nick Madrigal is playing third base Tuesday at Colorado, with Cody Bellinger covering first base and Christopher Morel filling the DH role. Alexander Canario has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa as a depth option off the bench.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Held out Monday

Candelario (back) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies. Candelario left Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks with tightness in his back, and he will not play a full nine innings one day later. It's unclear both if he will be available off the bench and if he will miss any further action.
