Player Outlook
Mr. October 2.0 had a monster 2023 season after a somewhat disappointing debut with Texas in 2022. Many expected Corey Seager to benefit from the reduction of overshifting, but nobody saw a 82-point surge and a career-best batting average coming from him. The shift does not get all the credit as Seager previously hit over .300 in two other full seasons, but the shift certainly helped him a bit. Seager along with Luis Arraez were the only two qualified players in baseball with OBP's over .390 despite 50 or fewer walks last year, and he would have easily had 100+ runs as well as RBIs had he not missed time with both a hamstring as well as a thumb injury. He returned from that thumb injury in early August, homered in his first at bat, and went on to hit 17 more regular season homers as a warm up for what he did in October to help Texas win the pennant. Two benchmarks for Seager in 2024: 40 homer and 100 RBIs - two things he has never accomplished in his excellent career to date.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Getting breather Monday

Seager is not in the lineup for Monday's game in Detroit. It's a routine day off for Seager, who has now started 14 of 17 games so far this season. The Rangers are going with Josh Smith at shortstop and Ezequiel Duran at third base.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Seager is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the A's. Seager started the past seven games and will take a seat after posting an .889 OPS during that stretch. It's likely just a maintenance day for the veteran shortstop since he was sidelined for most of spring training while recovering from offseason hernia surgery. Josh Smith will man shortstop in his place Tuesday.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Launches first home run

Seager went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win over the Rays. Leading off the sixth inning, Seager snapped a scoreless tie with a long ball that just snuck inside the right-field foul pole for his first home run of the campaign. The 29-year-old Seager has shown few signs of rust despite being limited by injuries during spring training -- he's now 8-for-22 (.364 average) with four runs scored and three RBI to start the season after slashing .327/.390/.623 with 33 homers and 96 RBI in 2023.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Gets day off

Seager is out of the lineup Sunday versus the Cubs. Seager is coming off sports hernia surgery he underwent in January and was able to play in only four spring training games. The 29-year-old recorded four hits with two RBI in Saturday's win. With his day off, Wyatt Langford will hit out of the two spot in left field, and Ezequiel Duran gets the start at shortstop.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Four hits in win

Seager went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 11-2 win over the Cubs. Seager was one of five Texas batters to log multiple hits in the contest. He has hits in both games thus far after being limited to eight plate appearances during spring training due to a groin injury.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: More activity Monday

Seager started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 in Monday's exhibition game against Boston. Seager, who missed most of the Cactus League with a groin injury, increased his activity from Sunday's spring debut. He went from two to three at-bats and three to six innings. The two teams will play another game Tuesday, and Seager is expected to participate. It's unclear if he'll play the full nine innings, but that is probably something the Rangers would want to see before Thursday's Opening Day matchup against the Cubs.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Makes spring debut

Seager started at shortstop and went 2-for-2 in Saturday's spring game against the Royals. Seager made his spring debut, which had been delayed following surgery to repair a sports hernia in January. He played three innings in the field before being replaced by Ezequiel Duran. The shortstop had been taking at-bats recently, and the Rangers were cautiously optimistic that he could get into game action. After the Rangers break camp Sunday, Seager is expected to play both exhibition games against the Red Sox on Monday and Tuesday, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Playing shortstop Saturday

Seager (groin) will start at shortstop and bat second in Saturday's spring training game against the Royals. Seager underwent sports hernia surgery in late January, and the shortstop has spent spring training ramping up his activity. He has participated in live batting practice since March 18 and appears healthy enough to make his 2024 Cactus League debut. Seager slashed .327/.390/.623 with 33 home runs and 96 RBI over 536 plate appearances in 2023.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Taking live batting practice Monday

Seager (groin) is scheduled to take live batting practice Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Seager has been trending in a good direction as he ramps back up following January sports hernia surgery. He has a chance to play in some Cactus League or exhibition games before the spring schedule comes to an end next Tuesday. If Seager is able to get into a game in the next week, he could be a realistic option for the Rangers' Opening Day lineup.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: More optimism for Opening Day

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that he's more optimistic Seager (groin) will be ready for Opening Day, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. It's not a exactly a specific update, but more optimism from the skipper is certainly an encouraging development. Seager resumed taking swings this week and has also been fielding groundballs and playing catch, and he should continue ramping up his baseball work during the closing stretch of camp. The 29-year-old appears to have a decent chance of being ready by Opening Day.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Taking light swings Monday

Seager (groin) will take some light swings Monday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. • Rangers' Corey Seager: Fields grounders, plays catch

Seager (groin) fielded some grounders and played catch Thursday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Seager has resumed some baseball activities but has not yet been cleared to swing a bat as he works his way back from sports hernia surgery. He is hoping to play in some Cactus League games before the spring schedule runs out, but it's uncertain as to when that might happen. It seems more likely that not that Seager will need some time on the injured list to start the season, but he shouldn't be out long.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Hoping for Cactus League at-bats

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday he's "hopeful" Seager (groin) will get some at-bats in Cactus League play before the end of spring training, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports. The 29-year-old's availability for Opening Day remains in question as he recovers from the hernia surgery he underwent in late January. Seager recently had his progress slowed by the flu, but it apparently wasn't enough to delay his potential return. It's unclear if he has resumed baseball activities, but there should be more clarity on his status as spring training continues to progress. Even if Seager isn't quite ready by Opening Day, he isn't expected to miss much time.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Not sure he'll be ready for opener

Seager (groin) told reporters Monday that he hopes to be ready for Opening Day but isn't sure it will happen, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Seager underwent surgery in January to repair a sports hernia and was just recently cleared for incline walking and riding a stationary bike. It's not clear when he might be able to resume baseball activities and play in games, but it does not appear to be imminent. If Seager needs a stint on the injured list to start the season, Ezequiel Duran would figure to be in line to fill in at shortstop for the Rangers.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Undergoes sports hernia surgery

Seager underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a sports hernia, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Seager initially suffered the injury during the postseason and the hope was that it would heal with some extended rest over the offseason. That didn't happen, however, so the decision was made to have the operation. The Rangers are hopeful that Seager will be ready in time for Opening Day, but if he's not, Ezequiel Duran would figure to see extra playing time in the early going. Seager was the runner-up for American League MVP in 2023 and captured World Series MVP honors during Texas' run to the title.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: In lineup after HBP

Seager (forearm) is starting at shortstop and batting second Wednesday against the Angels. Seager was removed from Tuesday's loss to the Angels a few innings after taking a Reid Detmers fastball off his right forearm, but X-rays turned up negative and he will immediately return to action for the Rangers in Wednesday's series finale. The 29-year-old has delivered a robust .332/.394/.640 batting line with 33 homers, 42 doubles and 96 RBI across 114 games this season.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: X-rays negative

X-rays on Seager's right forearm came back negative after he got hit by a pitch during Tuesday's loss against the Angels, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Seager remained in the game after getting hit by a 93-mph Reid Detmers fastball, but he was eventually pulled in the sixth after the Angels took a 9-1 lead. The Rangers will check back in with Seager on Wednesday, and his availability will likely hinge on how sore his forearm feels at that point.

  • Rangers' Corey Seager: Exits with forearm bruise

Seager was removed from Tuesday's game against the Angels with a right forearm contusion, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Seager took a 93-mph fastball off his forearm during the fifth inning and initially stayed in the game, but he was later removed during the sixth. Given the Rangers were down by eight runs at the time of Seager's removal, it's possible the decision to pull him was simply precautionary, but the team will still take a closer look at him and monitor his condition as the postseason approaches.
