The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with neck tightness. San Diego had previously confirmed Darvish to make his sixth start of the season Saturday versus Toronto, but the veteran right-hander's neck injury might have cropped up during a recent throwing session. His placement on the IL is retroactive to Monday, so Darvish will be eligible for activation as soon as April 30. The Padres recalled reliever Logan Gillaspie from Triple-A El Paso to take Darvish's spot on the 26-man active roster, but it's not immediately clear whom San Diego might turn to when Darvish's turn in the rotation comes up this weekend.... Padres' Yu Darvish: Low strikeout numbers Sunday
Darvish did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings. All of the damage against Darvish came in the fourth inning after he allowed an RBI single to Will Smith before Max Muncy brought him home with a two-run shot to right field. Outside of that, Darvish did not face much traffic on the bases, though he posted just seven whiffs on 92 pitches and has seen his strikeout numbers decrease in each start since he had seven March 28. The 37-year-old owns a 4.18 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB in 23.2 innings and will go for his first win of the year his next time out, which projects to be against the Blue Jays.... See More ... Padres' Yu Darvish: Lasts just three frames Monday
Darvish pitched three innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday. All of the damage on the scoreboard against Darvish came in the second inning, when he retired the first two batters he faced before allowing six straight Cubs to reach base in a four-run outburst. The veteran hurler was pulled after three frames with San Diego down 4-0, but a late Padres offensive surge took him off the hook for his second loss. Darvish logged a season-low three innings in the contest while giving up a season-high four runs, so it's safe to say that this was his worst outing of the campaign so far. He's still pitched pretty well overall though, as he holds a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB through four starts covering 18.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Takes loss in quality start
Darvish (0-1) was handed the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk across seven innings. He struck out six. Most of the damage came in the sixth inning, when Darvish yielded a two-run homer to Willson Contreras. Outside of the long ball, Darvish was solid but couldn't escape the loss with the Padres' offense plating just two runs on the day. Though Darvish has yet to enter the win column, he's been excellent through three starts, boasting a 2.30 ERA and 16 strikeouts -- good for the second most in MLB -- across 15.2 innings.... Padres' Yu Darvish: Fans seven in no-decision
Darvish (0-0) didn't factor into the decision Thursday, giving up one run on five hits and a walk over five innings against the Giants. He struck out seven. After tossing 3.2 innings during the Padres' two-game series with the Dodgers in South Korea to open the season, Darvish delivered another solid performance on Opening Day but couldn't pick up a victory. He punched out four of the first six batters he faced Thursday but gave up a pair of doubles in the third inning for his only run allowed. Darvish is off to a strong start to 2024, an encouraging sight after he posted a 4.56 ERA and 8-10 record in 2023. He's tentatively scheduled to take the mound next against the Cardinals on Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Starting domestic opener
Darvish will start for the Padres on Thursday versus the Giants in the team's domestic opener, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Darvish drew the start in the first game of the team's series in South Korea versus the Dodgers back on March 20, and the Padres have elected to give him the ball again for their home opener. He'll be followed by Joe Musgrove, Dylan Cease, Michael King and Matt Waldron.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Battles through 3.2 frames in Korea
Darvish tossed 3.2 innings against the Dodgers in a no-decision in South Korea on Wednesday, allowing an unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out three batters. Darvish began his outing inauspiciously by walking Mookie Betts on a pitch-clock-violation ball four, but he retired six of the next seven batters to get through two frames unscathed. However, the Dodgers made him work in the third, putting three straight runners on base with two outs. While Darvish was able to escape without giving up any runs by striking out Max Muncy with the bases loaded, the 32 pitches he threw in the frame led to him being pulled before he could get through four full innings. The short start isn't much of a surprise given the nature of the mid-March Opening Day assignment, and Darvish should be able to work up to a higher pitch count as he settles in to the regular season.... Padres' Yu Darvish: Set for Opening Day start
The Padres announced Monday that Darvish will serve as the team's Opening Day starter March 20 against the Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea. The Dodgers will counter with Tyler Glasnow in the first game, while Joe Musgrove opposes Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the second contest in Seoul on March 21. Darvish missed the final month of last season with a bone spur in his right elbow, but he's had no limitations this spring, permitting two runs with a 9:0 K:BB over 5.1 frames.... See More ... Padres' Yu Darvish: Fans six in second spring start
Darvish tossed 3.1 innings against Seattle in a Cactus League game Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out six batters. Darvish served up a two-run homer to Cade Marlowe in the second inning, but he was otherwise pretty sharp, throwing 30 of 46 pitches for strikes and punching out six batters. All three of the hits he surrendered aside from the long ball were singles, one of which was a pop-up that was lost in the sun and another that didn't leave the infield. Darvish has fanned nine hitters without issuing a walk over 5.1 frames this spring, and he looks to be on track to face the Dodgers in one of two contests in South Korea that will open the MLB regular season March 20-21.... Padres' Yu Darvish: Aims to be ready for Korea series
Darvish threw another live batting practice session Friday and expects his next outing to be in a Cactus League game, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Darvish's goal is to be ready to go for the Padres' series against the Dodgers on March 20-21 in South Korea, and he seems on track to meet that timeline. The veteran right-hander missed the final month of last season with a bone spur in his right elbow but has been throwing this spring without restrictions.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: No limitations in spring training
Padres manager Mike Shildt said last week that Darvish (elbow) will have no limitations in spring training, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Shildt noted that Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions without issue and has even faced a few hitters already. It's certainly a good sign after the 37-year-old missed the final month of last season with a bone spur in his right elbow. Darvish finished 2023 with a disappointing 4.56 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 141:43 K:BB through 136.1 innings. While he looks to be trending in a good direction, Darvish will remain a health risk in 2024 given his age and how last season concluded.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Shut down for season
The Padres announced Tuesday that Darvish (elbow) has officially been shut down for the rest of the season, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Darvish was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 28 due to a bone spur in his right elbow. His recovery has been slower than expected, so he'll turn his focus to rest and rehab over the next few weeks while the Padres play out the string on a non-playoff-contending season. The 37-year-old righty will finish the 2023 campaign with a 4.56 ERA and 1.30 WHIP alongside a 141:43 K:BB through 136.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Shut down with bone spur
Darvish was diagnosed Thursday with a bone spur in his right elbow and will be shut down temporarily, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish has not yet been ruled out for the remainder of the year, but that could certainly happen eventually given that the Padres are currently 7.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot. The veteran right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list this past Monday with an initial diagnosis of elbow inflammation.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Moved to IL with elbow inflammation
The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation. San Diego had been listing Darvish as its confirmed starting pitcher for Wednesday's series finale in St. Louis, but the right-hander will end up being deactivated after he picked up the elbow injury in his most recent outing Friday in Milwaukee or during his between-starts bullpen session. The Padres had moved the struggling Rich Hill to the bullpen this past weekend, but he'll presumably step back into the rotation to fill the spot vacated by Darvish, who won't be eligible to return until Sept. 10.... Padres' Yu Darvish: Tagged with five runs
Darvish (8-10) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk over four innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Milwaukee. Darvish's night was ruined by an ugly third inning in which the Brewers plated five runs. After posting a 2.55 ERA in his first six starts after the All-Star break, he's coughed up 13 runs in 16 frames (7.31 ERA) over his last three outings. On the year, he's sporting a 4.56 ERA with a 141:43 K:BB through 136.1 frames. Darvish is currently expected to face the Giants at home next week.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Fans seven in Saturday's loss
Darvish (8-9) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out seven. The veteran right-hander didn't pitch poorly, but San Diego's hitters couldn't get anything going in an eventual 8-1 loss as Arizona used a bullpen day. Darvish remains winless in August, but his 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB through 25 innings on the month have been solid. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Makes history but takes loss
Darvish fell to 8-8 in Monday's 4-1 loss to Baltimore, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters over seven innings. Darvish moved past Hideo Nomo for most strikeouts by a Japanese-born pitcher in MLB history when he fanned Ramon Urias in the sixth inning. That impressive feat aside, it was another frustrating performance for the right-hander, as he pitched pretty well overall but got little run support and took the loss. Darvish has posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 20 frames over three August starts but doesn't have a win to show for it. He's at a 2.98 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB over 42.1 innings in seven starts since the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Lacks run support again
Darvish allowed an unearned run on six hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday. Darvish has allowed just three runs (two earned) over his last 19 innings across three starts, but he has just one win to show for it in that span. The veteran right-hander was able to trim his ERA to 4.19 with the strong outing, though he still has a shaky 1.25 WHIP and 125:40 K:BB through 120.1 innings over 21 starts. Darvish is projected for a tough matchup in his next start, at home versus the Orioles next week.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Quality start goes to waste
Darvish allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. Darvish put the Padres in a position to win, but the bullpen melted down over the final two frames to squander his quality start. He's posted four quality starts in five outings since the All-Star break, with the lone exception a seven-run disaster versus the Pirates on July 24. Darvish is now at a 4.41 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 121:38 K:BB through 114.1 innings over 20 starts this season. He's projected for a road start in Seattle next week.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Yu Darvish: Tosses six shutout innings
Darvish (8-7) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out nine over six shutout innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Saturday. Darvish has turned in three quality starts over four outings since the All-Star break. This was a good bounce-back for him after the Pirates tagged him for seven runs in 4.1 innings in his last start. Darvish continues to battle inconsistency this season with a 4.53 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 117:38 K:BB through 107.1 innings over 19 starts. The 36-year-old is lined up for a home start against the Dodgers next week.... See More ... See Less
