Player Outlook
The Angels bet big that Tyler Anderson's progress with the Dodgers in 2022 was sticky, as they signed the lefty to a three-year, $40 million contract in November of that year. He kept the same formula, but his walks spiked and he was far more hittable in the zone. Opponents hit more than 40 points higher against Anderson and as a result his WHIP jumped from 1.00 to 1.49, while his ERA shot up nearly three full runs to 5.43. The estimators suggest he might have deserved better, but not much. Anderson has never been a big strikeout pitcher (career 20.1 K%), and it's looking more and more like the Dodgers captured lightning in a bottle during his All-Star campaign. That said, he will get his chance to bounce back and prove that season wasn't a total fluke with regular starts, at least to begin 2024. If the results don't improve, the Angels could eventually bounce him from the rotation.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Slated for spring debut Wednesday

Anderson (knee) is scheduled to start Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Rockies, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Anderson missed the final two weeks of the 2023 regular season due to left knee soreness, but he appears to have had a normal offseason and will toe the rubber for the Angels' fifth spring training game. After inking a three-year, $39 million deal with the Angels in November 2022, Anderson wasn't able to meet expectations in his first season in Anaheim, as he delivered a 5.43 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 119:64 K:BB in 141 innings. His contract should still give him plenty of security in the rotation in the early part of the upcoming season, but if Anderson continues to deliver middling results in his second year in Anaheim, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Angels shifted him to the bullpen and gave a younger pitcher a look in a starting role.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Out for rest of season

The Angels placed Anderson on the 15-day injured list Saturday with knee soreness, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. Anderson already had a start postponed due to his sore knee, and now he will simply be shut down for the rest of the season as he continues to recover. No replacement starter has been named yet for Sunday's game against Minnesota. Anderson will finish the season with a 5.43 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 141 innings after joining the Halos on a three-year, $40 million contract last offseason.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Pushed back due to sore knee

Anderson's next scheduled start has been pushed back to Sunday's series finale in Minnesota while he tends to knee soreness, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. It's not clear when Anderson's knee began bothering him, but he'll receive some extra rest in hopes that he can overcome the issue. Anderson had been slated to take the hill either Friday or Saturday, but since he'll be pushed back, the Angels will call up Davis Daniel from Triple-A Salt Lake to pitch Friday, while Kenny Rosenberg will get the nod Saturday. Anderson has been a major disappointment in his first season with the Angels, posting a 5.43 ERA over 27 appearances (25 starts).

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Yields four runs Saturday

Anderson allowed four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Tigers on Saturday. Anderson matched his season high with the five walks. He gave up a three-run home run to Zack Short in the second inning and an RBI single to Miguel Cabrera in the fifth, though Anderson was spared the loss when the Angels rallied to tie the game in the ninth. The southpaw is now at a 5.43 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 119:64 K:BB through 141 innings over 27 appearances (25 starts) this season. He's lined up for a road outing in Minnesota next weekend.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Goes eight innings in win

Anderson (6-6) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four over eight innings to earn the win over the Guardians on Saturday. While Anderson gave up multiple homers for just the fourth time this year, this was one of his better starts of the year. Both long balls were solo shots, and the Angels answered with four homers of their own to support him. Anderson's win was his first since July 23. The southpaw is now at a 5.36 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 112:59 K:BB through 136 innings over 26 outings (24 starts) this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Tigers.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Yields three runs in no-decision

Anderson allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to Oakland. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Anderson worked through five scoreless frames before the Athletics broke things open with a four-run sixth inning. He's given up at least three earned runs in four of his last five outings, posting an 8.37 ERA during that span. His season ERA now sits at 5.55 with a 108:58 K:BB across 128 innings. Anderson's next outing is projected to be at home against the Guardians.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Tagged for six earned runs

Anderson (5-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings against Philadelphia. He struck out three. The veteran lefty fell victim to the long ball Tuesday, surrendering home runs to Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm before exiting with nobody out in the sixth. Anderson lost all four of his decisions in August, posting an unsightly 8.10 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 23:14 K:BB across 23.1 innings. He is currently slated to face the first-place Orioles early next week.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Pitches in relief after Ohtani exit

Anderson (5-5) gave up four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings in relief of Shohei Ohtani (elbow) Wednesday to take the loss against the Reds in the first game of a doubleheader. Because Ohtani exited midway through the second inning with a UCL tear, Anderson was needed in long relief and ended up getting what amounted to a de facto start on normal rest. He was ultimately saddled with the loss but should have some longer-term security in the Anaheim rotation with the Angels having already announced that Ohtani won't pitch again this season. Anderson will end up missing out on a start during this weekend's series against the Mets, however. He'll likely make his next trip to the mound in Philadelphia to begin the upcoming week.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Yields five runs

Anderson allowed five runs on six hits and two walks over four-plus innings in Friday's loss to the Rays. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. Anderson gave up one run through three innings before the Rays broke through with a three-run fourth. He's been charged with 12 runs over his last 8.2 innings, raising his season ERA from 4.92 to 5.50 in the process. His record still sits at 5-4 next to a lackluster 95:49 K:BB through 113 frames. Anderson's next outing is projected to be on the road against the Mets next week.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Shelled for seven runs Saturday

Anderson (5-4) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings. Anderson got through three scoreless frames before the Astros struck for four runs in the fourth, with three coming on a Kyle Tucker homer. The left-hander then allowed four straight hitters to reach base with two outs in the fifth, three of whom came around to score. Anderson looked like he might be turning things around in his past two starts coming into Saturday, as he had allowed just three runs over 11.1 frames. However, he's been disappointing as a whole after signing with the Angels in the offseason, posting a 5.28 ERA and and 1.52 WHIP across 109 innings.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Strikes out six in loss

Anderson (5-3) allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Mariners. Anderson had gone two starts without walking multiple batters before regressing Saturday. He particularly struggled in the third inning, which saw him give up three of the five baserunners and both runs on a Julio Rodriguez double. Anderson continues to return mixed results with a 4.92 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 86:44 K:BB through 104.1 innings over 20 outings (19 starts) this season. He is tentatively lined up for a challenging road start in Houston next weekend.

Anderson did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing a run on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings in a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out two. Anderson has looked better recently, working to a 3.53 ERA over his last seven outings. He's now allowed one run or fewer in three of his previous five starts. Overall, the 33-year-old southpaw is 5-2 with a 4.98 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 80:31 K:BB across 18 starts (99.1 innings) this season. Anderson's next start is currently lined up for next week at home against the Mariners.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Yields four runs in win

Anderson (5-2) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over six-plus innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Pirates. Anderson gave up just one run through six frames but was charged with three more in the seventh inning after putting three Pirates on base while failing to record an out. It was the first time he completed six innings since June 25 in Colorado. Anderson has recorded a 5.68 ERA over his last nine starts, bumping his season number to 5.23 across 93 innings. His next start is projected to be in Toronto.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Fans five in short outing

Anderson did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over three innings against Houston. He struck out five. Anderson needed 85 pitches to get through just three frames in the inefficient outing. On the bright side, he forced 15 whiffs, and he's hit that mark in four of his last six outings. The 33-year-old still owns a disappointing 5.17 ERA with a 73:39 K:BB through 87 innings. Anderson's next outing is projected to be at home against the Pirates.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Works in long relief

Anderson tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen Friday against the Dodgers, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters. Manager Phil Nevin announced earlier in the week that Anderson would be available out of the bullpen until the All-Star break with the team not needing his services as a starter. The southpaw threw more pitches (71) on Friday than starter Griffin Canning (56), and neither hurler was able to contain the Dodgers' offense. Given his workload in the contest, Anderson is unlikely to pitch again until after the Midsummer Classic.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Available in relief

Anderson will be available in relief for the Angels until the All-Star break, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The Angels need just two starters before the break and they believe Anderson is better suited for relief, if needed, than Griffin Canning or Reid Detmers. It's been a disappointing start to Anderson's tenure in Anaheim, with the lefty posting a 5.20 ERA in 15 starts.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Takes no-decision Saturday

Anderson allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three over five scoreless innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. Anderson did his part, but Sam Bachman and Chris Devenski let the game slip away from the Angels. Anderson hadn't pitched a scoreless outing since his first start of the year April 2 versus the Athletics, and he gave up 14 runs over 22 innings across four starts in June. The veteran southpaw is at a 5.20 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 63:35 K:BB across 79.2 innings through 15 starts overall. His last start of the first half is projected to be on the road against the Dodgers.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Earns quality start in loss

Anderson (4-2) took the loss Sunday versus the Rockies. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings. Anderson picked up his fifth quality start of the year, but he didn't get enough run support to avoid the loss. While he struck out a season-high nine, a home run and a pair of sacrifice flies accounted for the runs on his line. Anderson has had mixed results for much of the year with a 5.54 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 60:33 K:BB over 74.2 innings through 14 starts. He's projected to make his next start at home in a challenging matchup versus the Diamondbacks.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Picks up fourth win

Anderson (4-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Royals. He struck out six. Anderson bounced back from a poor stretch of starts, giving up just two runs over five innings of work after allowing four or more runs in each of his last three starts. Through 13 appearances (68.2 innings), Anderson sports a 5.64 ERA and a 4.06 BB/9 but has given up just three home runs over his last 10 starts. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start against the Rockies at Coors Field.

  • Angels' Tyler Anderson: Strikes out seven in no-decision

Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 9-6 win over the Rangers, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. Anderson allowed five or more runs for the fifth time this year but tied his season high with seven strikeouts. The left-hander's ERA has ballooned to 5.80 with him giving up 15 runs over his past three starts (15 innings), and his first season with the Angels continues to be a disappointment. Anderson signed a three-year, $40 million deal with the Halos this offseason after posting a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with the Dodgers in 2022, both career bests. Despite his struggles, Anderson remains a key piece of the Angels' rotation and is slated to pitch again during the finale of a three-game set in Kansas City.
