Player Outlook
Enrique Hernandez's time in Boston ended with a whimper, as he struggled to a .599 OPS in 86 games with the Red Sox last season before being traded. The Dodgers brought him back to Los Angeles, where he had enjoyed his most success, and Hernandez indeed rebounded down the stretch. He was even included on the team's NLDS roster and will return to the Dodgers in 2024, having signed a one-year deal in February. After his 2018 season, it looked like Hernandez might break the chains of merely being a utility/platoon player, but at this point in his career he will have to accept a niche role. Hernandez, now 32, is a career .239 hitter with modest power and little speed. Coming off double hernia surgery in October, he may be eased into action this spring, though the team expects him to be available for the March 20-21 series against the Padres in South Korea.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Draws sixth start of season

Hernandez will start in center field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Cubs. The utility man will be making his sixth start through the Dodgers' first 12 games, with four coming in center field and one apiece coming in left field and at third base. Hernandez will likely have a regular spot against left-handed pitching throughout the season, but the Dodgers may need to be hit harder by the injury bug before he gets more frequent looks versus right-handers, though Jason Heyward being out with a back injury opens things up a bit on that side.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Expected for Korea series

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Monday that Hernandez (groin) is expected to be on the active roster for the team's two-game series against the Padres in South Korea on March 20 and 21, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Hernandez had double hernia surgery in October and is now getting a late start to camp after signing with the Dodgers on Monday. However, the team still anticipates the utility player having enough time to ramp up for its early series overseas. Hernandez should see plenty of starts against left-handed pitching for the Dodgers this season.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Back with Dodgers on one-year deal

Hernandez (groin) confirmed via social media Monday that he agreed to a one-year contract with the Dodgers. Multiple reports suggested that a deal between Hernandez and the Dodgers was close, and the veteran utility man verified himself that the deal is done. The Dodgers suddenly had a need for a right-handed hitting outfielder after trading away Manuel Margot earlier Monday, and Hernandez can fit that bill along with offering infield protection, as well. He had just a .599 OPS in 86 games for the Red Sox last season but finished much stronger with the Dodgers in posting a .731 OPS in 54 contests. Hernandez underwent double-hernia surgery in October but is expected to be healthy when he reports to spring training.

  • Enrique Hernandez: Recovering from hernia surgery

Hernandez underwent double-hernia surgery Oct. 24, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Hernandez is expected to be able to resume baseball activities by early December, but this news will further cloud his free-agent appeal. The 32-year-old utility player has batted just .230/.290/.349 in 233 games (910 plate appearances) since the beginning of the 2022 campaign.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Playing center field in Game 3

Hernandez is playing center field and batting seventh Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLDS at Arizona. Hernandez hit an RBI single off the bench in Monday's Game 2 loss and will now get the nod over James Outman in Game 3 as the Dodgers look to avoid being swept by the Diamondbacks. Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a double and a homer against Game 3 starter Brandon Pfaadt during the regular season.

Hernandez was a late addition to Friday's lineup, and he'll start in left field while hitting seventh. Hernandez was not included in the original lineup, but he replaced David Peralta, who was scratched for an unknown reason. Hernandez has nine hits across 27 at-bats in his last 10 games, including a home run and two doubles.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Goes deep Friday

Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk Friday in an 8-5 victory against the Nationals. Hernandez hit one of three homers for the Dodgers off MacKenzie Gore in the contest, swatting a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning. Hernandez continues to see semi-regular playing time for Los Angeles despite not being the primary option at any position, and he's gone 5-for-12 with two RBI over his past three games. Since rejoining the Dodgers via trade July 25, the utility man is slashing .265/.326/.436 with three homers, 18 RBI and 13 runs over 36 games.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Retreats to bench Sunday

Hernandez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. The utility man will head to the bench after he started in each of the past four games while going 5-for-18 with one home run, three doubles, two walks, five RBI and two runs in addition to picking up reps in center field and at third base and shortstop. He should be a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handers and will see occasional starts versus right-handed pitching.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Has productive day at plate

Hernandez went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Guardians. Hernandez doubled in his first at-bat before coming around to score on a Mookie Betts single, giving the Dodgers their first run of the game. The utility player then chipped in an RBI double and a solo homer in his final two plate appearances, giving him his first long ball since Aug. 7. It was just his third three-hit performance this season, but two of them have come since he was re-acquired by Los Angeles. He's now batting .292 in August with two homers, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored and has driven in two runs in back-to-back games.

Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk Monday in a 13-7 victory over San Diego. Hernandez went deep in the sixth inning, swatting a solo shot to left-center field. It was his first long ball since rejoining the Dodgers as a result of a July 25 trade with the Red Sox. • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Playing regularly against lefties

Hernandez will start in left field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Padres. Hernandez will stick in the lineup for the seventh straight game and will appear in his 10th contest overall since beginning his second stint with the Dodgers on July 26. He's managed a .286/.300/.393 slash line through his first nine games with the Dodgers, but don't expect Hernandez's playing time to remain quite as robust moving forward. Hernandez has mostly benefited from the Dodgers having encountered a lefty-heavy slate of late, with Sunday's game marking the fifth time in six contests that Los Angeles has opposed a southpaw starter. He's not expected to be a lineup regular versus right-handed pitching.

  • Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Returning to Dodgers in trade

The Dodgers acquired Hernandez in a trade from the Red Sox on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The Red Sox will receive pitchers Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman in return for Hernandez, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. Hernandez has posted an ugly .222/.279/.320 batting line in 323 plate appearances this season after also struggling at the dish in 2022, but he can play shortstop and second base, and the Dodgers need help at both spots. The 31-year-old seems likely to operate in a super-utility role, even covering some outfield, as he makes his return to Los Angeles. He played six seasons with the Dodgers between 2015 and 2020.

  • Red Sox's Enrique Hernandez: Has manager's confidence

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Hernandez has been playing "good shortstop" for the last month and is confident with him playing the position, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. "I can say with confidence that we've turned that page a month ago," Cora said Saturday. Hernandez's struggles have been well documented. He had 14 errors (12 throwing) and a minus-5 defensive runs saved over 470 innings prior to a start at shortstop Saturday. Cora said they spotted mechanical issues, which has been addressed, and has no issues using him going forward. Shortstop will be a rotation of sorts with Hernandez cycling in with Yu Chang, and potentially Pablo Reyes (abdomen) when he comes off the 10-day injured list.

His broken-bat blooper, with an exit velocity of 52.7 mph and expected batting average of .150, fell into left field to plate the tying and go-ahead runs. Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-1 win over the White Sox. Hernandez ended an 0-for-10 skid with his hit, which was one of just four knocks for the Red Sox. The versatile 31-year-old continues to split time between second base, shortstop and center field, which allows him to be in the lineup regularly. It was just Boston's second hit with runners in scoring position during the three-game set in the Bronx. • Red Sox's Enrique Hernandez: Homers in win

Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's victory over the Yankees. The 391-foot blast was his sixth homer of the season and ultimately proved to be the deciding run in the contest. The Red Sox have taken advantage of Hernandez's versatility as he has seen action all over the diamond, starting games at second base, shortstop and center field. The 31-year-old has struggled mightily at the dish, however, and over his last seven games he has been particularly bad with a .160 average to go along with eight strikeouts.
