Matt Corral: Not joining Pats' practice squad
Corral won't sign with the Patriots' practice squad, contrary to previous reports, according to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
Kyed reported Tuesday that Corral was set to join New England's practice squad after he cleared waivers, but the second-year signal-caller either had a change of heart or the Patriots chose to go in a different direction. Either way, Corral will remain a free agent for now.

Matt Corral: Signs with New England
Corral signed with the Patriots' practice squad on Tuesday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
The quarterback cleared waivers earlier in the day after being placed there by New England on Monday. Corral had spent more than a week away from the team before these moves. The second-year player is the third quarterback on the roster behind starter Mac Jones and backup Bailey Zappe.

Corral (undisclosed) was placed on the Patriots' exempt/left squad list Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The second-year signal-caller was not waived by New England but was placed on the team's reserve/left squad list. It's unclear why Corral is not with the Patriots at the moment, but once he returns, he'll rejoin a quarterback room of Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.

It's unclear what injury Corral suffered during the week or if it weighed into the decision to waive the second-year signal caller, but it's entirely possible Corral could rejoin the Patriots' practice squad in due time. The Patriots signed Bailey Zappe to the 53-man roster in a corresponding move.

Patriots' Matt Corral: Questionable for Week 1
Corral (not injury-related) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official website reports.
Corral has been in New England for only eight days after being claimed off waivers from the Panthers at initial roster cuts. Bailey Zappe will get the promotion from the practice squad to back up Mac Jones if the team deems Corral not ready.

Coach Bill Belichick acknowledged Monday that he was unsure whether Corral would be ready to handle the Patriots' No. 2 QB duties in the team's season opener against the Eagles on Sunday, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
The Patriots claimed Corral off waivers from the Panthers this past Thursday, so whether he's ready to assume the top backup role this weekend hinges on the 2022 third-rounder quickly absorbing the team's playbook. With that in mind, it's possible that the Patriots could elevate Bailey Zappe from their practice squad to serve as Mac Jones' Week 1 understudy.

The Patriots have claimed Corral off waivers from the Panthers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Corral, who was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, missed his entire rookie campaign after suffering a left foot injury during the preseason, but after being let go by Carolina, he'll now have an opportunity to work behind New England starter Mac Jones. Also in the team's signal-caller mix is 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe, who was added to the Patriots' practice squad Wednesday.

Matt Corral: Time up in Carolina
Corral was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The 2022 third-round pick missed his entire rookie season while recovering from Lisfranc surgery, and by the time Corral recovered, the Panthers had already made a commitment to another young quarterback in 2023 first overall pick Bryce Young. It's possible that another team will take a chance on a healthy Corral's potential and scoop him up, but it's more likely that the former Ole Miss quarterback will have to settle for a practice-squad spot somewhere after clearing waivers.
