Nauta joined a list of eight Lions players who were placed on the list earlier in the offseason, but it appears the second-year tight end is healthy well ahead of the season and in time for training camp. In addition to serving as depth at that position, Nauta could be a candidate for some lead blocking should the primary fullback, which was Nick Bawden the last two seasons, miss time in 2020.

The Lions have placed Nauta (illness) on the reserve/COVID list, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
Nauta is one of eight Lions on the list along with offensive stalwarts Matthew Stafford, Kenny Golladay and T.J. Hockenson (ankle). A 2019 seventh-round pick, Nauta spent much of his rookie season on the practice squad before making his pro debut Week 12 and logging snaps in each of the last six games. Even though he's listed as a tight end, he got time at fullback and hauled in two of three targets for 13 yards.

Nauta served as Detroit's primary lead blocker over the final six games of the 2019 season, Chris Burke of the Athletic reports.
Burke also notes that the Lions "badly want a multifaceted fullback," and their top guy at that position, Nick Bawden (knee), has ended each of the past two seasons on injured reserve due to knee injuries. That's what paved the way for Nauta to serve as the team's lead blocker down the stretch in 2019, and Bawden's recovery from his most recent setback will presumably play a large role in how much time Nauta will see at fullback in 2020. In any case, Nauta's versatility as a blocker and receiver should help his odds of securing a roster spot in advance of Week 1,

Nauta (hamstring) finished the 2019 season with two catches on three targets for 13 yards over six games.
Detroit took a flier on Nauta in the seventh round of last year's draft and the Georgia product ended up appearing in a handful of games for the team. With incumbent No. 3 tight end Logan Thomas headed for unrestricted free agency, there soon could be an opportunity for Nauta to move up a peg on the depth chart in advance of the 2020 campaign. After all, it seems unlikely that the Lions will again devote significant resources to bring in more competition at tight end.

Nauta caught one of two targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 38-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
While Nauta set career highs in playing time (12 offensive snaps), targets and receiving yards, that's not saying much for the inexperienced tight end playing in his fourth career regular-season game. As long as Jesse James and Logan Thomas stay healthy, Nauta should remain far away from fantasy lineups.
