Shurmur was activated from the practice squad COVID list prior to being released by Washington on Tuesday.
The quarterback entered league COVID protocols Dec. 30, but he was released Tuesday after being activated from the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list. Shurmur has yet to make his NFL debut after going undrafted in 2019.

Football Team's Kyle Shurmur: Backing up Garrett Gilbert
Washington elevated Shurmur from its practice squad ahead of Tuesday's game against the Eagles.
Shurmur has yet to take his first NFL regular-season snaps, but he'll at least dress as the Football Team's backup quarterback for the Week 15 contest after neither Taylor Heinicke (illness) nor Kyle Allen (illness) were cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. Though Shurmur has been in the Washington organization since September, the Football Team will turn to the more experienced Garrett Gilbert to make the spot start in place of Heinicke, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. Gilbert was just signed off the Patriots' practice squad Friday, so if he struggles early on against the Eagles, Washington could be compelled to give him the quick hook in favor of Shurmur.

Kyle Shurmur: Could see first NFL action
Shurmur and Garrett Gilbert could be options to start at quarterback in Tuesday's game against Philadelphia with both Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Shurmur has been on Washington's practice squad throughout the year, while Gilbert was with the Patriots' practice squad before signing with Washington on Friday. It sounds like Gilbert's NFL experience may win out over Shurmur's familiarity with the playbook, and there's also perhaps some chance of either Heinicke or Allen being cleared by Tuesday. Allen was placed on the COVID list Wednesday, with Heinicke then joining him two days later.

Kyle Shurmur: Joins Washington's practice squad
Shurmur signed with Washington's practice squad Monday.
Shurmur was unable to secure a role with the Bengals during camp after he joined the team on a futures deal in January. However, he'll provide additional depth at quarterback for Washington since Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) is slated to miss time. While Taylor Heinicke figures to serve as the interim starter with Kyle Allen available as a backup, Shurmur will be available if the team's quarterbacks encounter additional injuries.

Bengals' Kyle Shurmur: Receives future contract
The Bengals signed Shurmur to a reserve/future contract Monday.
The 24-year-old is the son of Broncos' offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. The Vanderbilt product will compete for a backup role behind Joe Burrow (knee) in 2021. Brandon Allen and Ryan Finley are both favorites for the job after starting over Shurmur this year.

Shurmur signed with Denver on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Shurmur's most recent NFL experience comes from his time with Kansas City's practice squad, but now he'll join a team that Sunday became the first in 55 years to start a non-QB under center, per the Elias Sports Bureau. A rash of COVID-19 disqualifications to Denver's QB room left practice squad call-up -- and recent wide receiver -- Kendall Hinton as the starting option Week 12 against New Orleans. Shurmur could possibly be thrust into action this upcoming Sunday in Kansas City, but starter Drew Lock recently tested negative for the virus after being considered a high-risk close contact to Jeff Driskel (who tested positive for COVID last week). Broncos offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, is Kyle's father.

The Chiefs waived Shurmur on Monday, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
Shurmur spent time with the Chiefs during the 2019 offseason, and he rejoined the practice squad in November, but he now looks to have been beaten out for the No. 3 role by Jordan Ta'amu. The former Vanderbilt signal-caller will explore options for a similar depth role elsewhere in the league.

Shurmur spent time with the Chiefs during the preseason before eventually being cut ahead of Week 1. The former Vanderbilt quarterback returned to Kansas City's practice squad in November, where he spent the remainder of the season. With veterans Chad Henne and Matt Moore slated to become free agents, Shurmur could get a ton of valuable reps this offseason.

Patrick Mahomes is expected to be out this week after dislocating his kneecap last Thursday, so Shurmur makes his way to the active roster to serve as the Chiefs' backup quarterback. Matt Moore will work as the starter for now while Mahomes has no official timetable for his return.
