College football Top 25 scores, highlights, games today: Michigan State, Indiana notch dramatic Week 1 wins

Week 1 of the college football season continued it's build-up on Friday night with eight more games, a couple of which featured serious drama. A Big Ten showdown between Illinois and Indiana came down to the wire before the Hoosiers escaped with a 23-20 victory courtesy of a 1-yard touchdown run from Shaun Shivers with 23 seconds left.

The go-ahead score marked Indiana's first touchdown since early in the second quarter, and the Hoosiers struggled to run the football all night against a stingy Illinois defensive front. But after the Illini settled for a field goal with 2:16 left to make it 20-16, the Indiana offense came to life in a two-minute drill situation. Missouri transfer quarterback Connor Bazelak led the decisive 75-yard scoring drive -- the Hoosiers had just 70 yards in the second half to that point -- and set up Shivers' touchdown by completing 7 of 10 passes on the series.

In other Big Ten action, No. 15 Michigan State got a test from Western Michigan before emerging with a 35-13 win. The Spartans led 21-3 early in the second quarter before hitting a dry spell, allowing the Broncos to close to within one score late in the third quarter. Ultimately, Michigan State snapped back to life in the fourth quarter to avoid any late-game drama, but things were tense for a while in East Lansing, Michigan.

Though WMU's upset bid came up short, there were a couple of unexpected results from the night. Old Dominion knocked off Virginia Tech 20-17 and William & Mary of the FCS upset Charlotte 41-24.

Sonny Dykes wins big in TCU debut

Final: TCU 38, Colorado 13

The Horned Frogs didn't have much trouble against the Buffs, scoring 31 of their 38 points in the second half as they pulled away for an easy victory in Sonny Dykes' first game with the program. While quarterback Chandler Morris did sustain a knee injury, Brett McMurphy reports it's only a tweak and he should be available within the next couple of weeks. Garbage time did provide a glimpse at backup quarterback Sam Jackson, who showed some brilliance with his arm and legs. Derius Davis also had a big day with a touchdown on offense and special teams. The Frogs are a Big 12 sleeper and could be a lot of fun this year.

Horned Frogs ahead

Half: TCU 7, Colorado 6

Colorado has outgained TCU 212-67 in total yards in the first half as the Sonny Dykes era has started slow offensively in a road game. The Buffs have moved the ball pretty well but have settled for a couple of FGs. TCU, which started Chandler Marris at QB over Max Duggan, has settled for punts. Brendon Lewis got the start at QB for the Buffs, but J.T. Shrout has played as well.

Great finish

Final: Indiana 23, Illinois 20

Another great finish, this time in Bloomington, where the Hoosiers rally late for a win over Illinois. Connor Bazelak completed 7 of 10 passes while leading IU 75 yards after Illinois kicked a FG to make it 20-16 with 2:16 remaining. Shaun Shivers then scored the go-ahead TD from 1-yard out with 23 seconds left. Tough loss for the Illini, who kept Indiana from running the football all night.

Illini feeling good

Start 4Q: Illinois 17, Indiana 16

The lone touchdown of the third quarter went to Illinois as Tommy Devito found Brian Hightower for a 16-yard touchdown at the 12:59 mark. Indiana punted on its first two possession of the quarter and faces a fourth-and-long to start the fourth quarter. Typical Big Ten slugfest here.

Old Dominion shocks Virginia Tech

Final: Old Dominion 20, Virginia Tech 17

The Monarchs pick up the biggest win in the young history of their program after shocking Virginia Tech at home. Surprisingly, this means Old Dominion moves to 2-0 at home against the Hokies. ODU picked off Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells four times, but the biggest play of the game came in the second quarter when a muffed field goal snap was picked up and returned for an early touchdown. The Monarchs scored a decisive touchdown with 33 seconds left to move to 1-0 and send Brent Pry to a loss in his first career game.

First FCS over FBS upset

After two FCS games went to overtime last week, William & Mary became the first FCS squad to upset an FBS squad with a 41-24 win over Charlotte. Quarterback Darius Wilson completed 12-of-18 passes for 237 yards passing and two scores, and added 67 yards on the ground. The 49ers were without starting quarterback Chris Reynolds, but have now lost their first two games by a combined 47 points. Things don't get easier as Charlotte hosts Maryland, travels to Georgia State and South Carolina in the coming weeks.

Duke rolls

Final: Duke 30, Temple 0

Duke eased off the gas in the second half after taking a 24-0 halftime lead in coach Mike Elko's debut. The Owls, playing their first game under new coach Stan Drayton, were able to pick up 10 first downs in the second half after mustering just two in the first. But they can't get across the goal-line. Riley Leonard was the star for the Blue Devils, completing 24 of 30 passes for 328 yards and two TDs.

FINAL: No. 15 Michigan State 35, Western Michigan 13

Things got a little hairy down the stretch, but the Spartans used two touchdowns in the last 6:28 of play -- including a 43-yard pass from quarterback Payton Thorne to Tre Mosley -- to survive an upset bid from Western Michigan. Thorne only completed half his passes, but threw for four touchdowns to deliver a victory. Wisconsin transfer running back Jalen Berger played well in his first game, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdowns. Western Michigan freshman quarterback Jack Salopek played well in his first start, throwing for 193 yards and converting numerous third downs. However, Michigan State pulled away at the end.

Hokies leave door open

8:57 4Q: Virginia Tech 17, Old Dominion 13

Virginia Tech did well to hold Old Dominion to a short FG on the last series, but the Hokies couldn't do anything offensively and now the Monarchs have the football and are back in business. Looks like we could have a good finish coming in Norfolk as ODU is already in Virginia Tech territory with plenty of time left.

Down to the wire in Charlotte

4Q: William & Mary 34, Charlotte 24

Tribe quarterback Darius Wilson continues to play an incredible game against an FBS opponent with 188 yards passing, 78 yards rushing and a rushing score to put William & Mary up by two scores against Charlotte in the fourth quarter. The 49ers are without starting quarterback Chris Reynolds, but that's little excuse for giving up 477 yards against an FCS opponent.

Stingy D

End 3Q: Virginia Tech 17, Old Dominion 10

It hasn't been pretty whatsoever, but Virginia Tech's defense has been TOUGH in its first game under Brent Pry. Old Dominion is driving to begin the fourth. But the Monarchs are in the game almost exclusively because of the botched FG snap by the Hokies in the first half that created a fumble recovery TD for ODU. VT got its touchdown in the third quarter after an Old Dominion fumble and has been underwhelming offensively.

Spartans struggling

4Q: No. 15 Michigan State 21, Western Michigan 13

Don't look now but Western Michigan is quietly playing its way back into the game against ranked Michigan State. The Broncos scored 10 unanswered points in the second half and should have more points if not for two fumbles within the 40-yard line. Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne has missed on four of his last five passes, including an interception.

Western Michigan has the second-worst winning percentage all-time against ranked opponents among FBS teams with a 1-36 all-time mark. Getting a second win on the road against an in-state rival would be huge for Tim Lester's program.

Indiana up at half

Half: Indiana 16, Illinois 10

With Illinois giving up nothing on the ground, Indiana has become pretty much one-dimensional. The Hoosiers get a 43-yard field goal from Charles Campbell with 22 seconds left to increase their lead. Illinois scored on its second possession but has gone fumble, punt, FG, punt since then. Indiana scored on its last three possessions of the half, but the last two were field goals.

Kansas rolling

HALF: Kansas 35, Tennessee Tech 3

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels is playing out of his mind in the first half against an FCS opponent. Daniels has completed 14-of-15 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown, and added another 11-yard scamper for a score. The Jayhawks have struggled to find wins -- even against FCS opponents -- but Kansas has already all but put this one away by halftime.

Duke dominating

Start 3Q: Duke 24, Temple 0

You may not hear this much more in the 2022 season, but Duke is just dominating its opponent right now. Temple amassed just 50 total yards and two first downs in the first Hal, netting -6 yards on the ground. The Blue Devils rolled up 337 yards and 17 first downs behind a 15 of 17 clip from QB Riley Leonard. Duke will have its work cut out in the ACC under first-year coach Mike Elko, but this is an encouraging start.

Indiana goes deep

10:43 2Q: Indiana 10, Illinois 7

Boom, there's a beautiful throw from Connor Bazelak to D.J. Matthews Jr. that puts the Hoosiers back ahead. He had all day to throw and put it on the money for a 52-yard score. IU has struggled to get anything going on the ground, and Bazelak is just 6 of 14. But big-chunk plays like that can make up for quite a bit.

Virginia Tech-Old Dominion in awkward game delay

It's not uncommon early in the season for games to be delayed because of severe weather, but assistant coaches getting stuck in the elevator is a new one. But that's exactly what has happened for the Hokies coming out of halftime against the Monarchs. Maybe Tech's coaches could use the extra time to figure out how to get back out in front.

Kansas comes out strong

2Q: Kansas 21, Tennessee Tech 3

It's been five years since the Jayhawks have dominated an FCS opponent, but all systems are a go in Lawrence early against Tennessee Tech. Quarterback Jalon Daniels has completed all three of his passes for 77 yards passing to set up a pair of touchdowns. Kansas is averaging 17.5 yards per play.

Michigan State cruising

HALF: No. 15 Michigan State 21, Western Michigan 3

The offense has been a little streaky, but Michigan State's defense has put together a strong performance to keep the Broncos underwater. The defense has forced a pair of fumbles, while quarterback Payton Thorne posted 154 yards passing and three scores in the first half. The running game is just starting to get going for the Spartans, but Michigan State is in a great position to ride out a victory.

Illinois gets first TD

Late 1Q: Illinois 7, Indiana 3

Illinois just went 83 yards on 10 plays to take the lead on Indiana with a 5-yard TD pass from Tommy Devito to Isaiah Williams. Indiana got a FG on its first possession. Connor Bazelak got the start at QB for the Hoosiers. The Mizzou transfer was 1 of 4 throwing on IU's first series.

Catastrophe for VT

Half: Old Dominion 10, Virginia Tech 7

If Brent Pry is going to bring back the Beamer Ball glory days of special teams dominance, he's got a long way to go. A botched field goal snap for the Hokies just led to a special teams touchdown for Old Dominion. That's a 10 point swing just before half. That error, combined with two interceptions from Grant Wells, has made this first half pretty rough for the Hokies.

Upset alert

2Q: William & Mary 17, Charlotte 3

Year 4 of the Will Healy era is off to an inauspicious start. After losing by 30 points to FAU, the 49ers are down by two touchdowns against an FCS opponent at home in Week 1. Tribe quarterback Darius Wilson is playing out of his mind with 78 yards passing and 44 yards rushing on just six total touches. There haven't been any FCS over FBS upsets yet, but Charlotte could start a wave.

Blue Devils start new era

Start 2Q: Duke 10, Temple 0

Duke scores on two of its first three possessions (3-and-out on the other) in the first quarter to take an early lead on Temple. The Owls have yet to notch a first down. Riley Leonard has looked pretty sharp for the Blue Devils, 6-of-6 for 87 yards with a couple of nice plays in the run game as well in coach Mike Elko's head coaching debut.

Sparty heating up

2Q: No. 15 Michigan State, Western Michigan 3

After punting on the first three drives, the Spartans have started to find a spark. Quarterback Payton Thorne has completed four of his last five passes with a pair of touchdown tosses to overcome a 3-0 advantage and get Michigan State rolling in the second. MSU is starting to flex its athleticism.

Hokies ahead

End 1Q: Virginia Tech 7, Old Dominion 0

The Hokies jumped ahead 7-0 on an 18-yard TD run from QB Grant Wells. The Marshall transfer started out well, but a Wells INT has the Monarchs in good shape to start the second quarter. Old Dominion was just a 6.5 point underdog and look potent enough to give their in-state ACC foe some headaches tonight as Brent Pry coaches his first game for Virginia Tech.

Injury report

Looks like the Spartans will be a little thin at wide receiver this evening against Western Michigan from a depth standpoint. None of these guys were expected to be primary targets for Payton Thorne, but Foster did catch 12 passes for 164 yards last season. Jayden Reed and Tre Mosley should be the top options at WR for the Spartans.
