A guide to betting on the Champions League

What makes a good Champions League betting site?
1. Bonuses & promotions
Every bettor will have their own reasons to favor a welcome bonus, but we evaluate the maximum potential value as well as the ease of accessing that value. It’s also key to keep in mind promotions for existing users, including loyalty and referral programs.. We also examine the site and consider any potential referral options or loyalty rewards.
2. Competitive odds & betting markets
Aside from the obvious Champions League betting markets like money lines and totals, we look for betting sites that offer a plethora of soccer, including the English Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany), FIFA World Cup (Men and Women), and MLS (United States). The variety of player prop markets plays a significant role in the decision.
3. Live betting
Live betting has become a staple in today’s online sports betting industry, and a quality Champions League betting site will offer this key feature. Having the ability to live bet on matches takes betting on the Champions League to the next level. Odds will update in real time, and you can place a flurry of wagers during a match.
4. Banking options
The more options a betting site offers for deposits and withdrawals, the better. For example, debit cards, credit cards, ACH bank transfers, online banking, and PayPal are some common options to consider.
5. Mobile app quality
Today’s generation of sports bettors wants a quick and seamless way to bet. Betting through a desktop site is a perfectly fine way to play, but being able to bet on the go is extremely convenient. Having a mobile app that is not only visually appealing and efficiently laid out but also engineered with strong technology is a vital piece of a smooth online betting experience. Determining whether a betting site is easily navigated to find banking information, customer service, promotions, and betting markets goes a long way in making this determination.
Understanding Champions League betting markets
The UEFA Champions League has a variety of betting options. In the majority of cases, pre-game odds are used:
Moneyline
Betting on the team that’ll win the game. The moneyline is a standard bet across most sports. The underdog will typically have a “+” symbol next to their odds, though due to the possibility of a draw, the favorite may also have a “+” symbol. For example, if Barcelona is +260, it means that if you bet $100 on Barcelona to win and they do, you’ll receive $260 plus your initial $100 stake back.
As with the underdog, the favorite will typically have a “-” symbol next to their odds, though this is not always the case due to the possibility of a draw. For example, if Man City is -150, it means that you’d need to wager $150 to win $100 on a winning Man City bet.
In soccer betting, it is important to note that moneyline wagering is three-way, with bettors able to bet on a draw. Since there are three options instead of two, it’s not uncommon to find plus odds on all three moneyline bets.
Point spread or Asian handicap
The point spread is used to make up the gap in strength and weakness between the top and weaker teams.
With these bets, you “receive” or “give” points. If a team is -1.5, and you bet on them, you can still lose even if they win the game, if they win by less than two goals. Conversely, if you bet on a team with a spread of +1.5 and they lose by only a single goal, you’ll still win your bet.
Total
The total number of goals scored in the game. For soccer and Champions League betting you may see this bet listed on a sportsbook as “total goals”.
The line will often be set at 2.5 total goals and you can bet on the over or under. Some sportsbooks, like DraftKings, let you easily adjust the total goals line on the site or app, changing up the odds as you move the line.
Team total
Similar to the total goals bet which sets a line for combined goals scored by both teams, you can also bet on how many goals each team will score individually.
Both teams to score
A very popular soccer bet to make is “both teams to score”. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but you’re betting that both teams will score at least one goal in a given match.
Player props
A popular player prop is how many shots or shots on target a player will have. A line will be set for each relevant player in each game, and you can bet on whether the player will hit or fall short of that mark.
Betting on popular players like Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane is common here.
Futures
Odds on the Champions League are known as “Outrights” or “Futures”. At this level, you can pick a variety of wagers including advancing to knockout rounds, reaching a certain state, win the Champions League and more.
You can typically find this market available before and during the tournament throughout the year.
Parlays
These include same game parlays. You add multiple picks to a single bet slip. Each pick must win for a parlay sports bet to be paid as a winner, but you’re awarded better odds than if you bet on them as singles.
Champions League betting strategies
Interested in a few betting strategies that could be put into practice when you’re betting on the Champions League? Here are three of our favorites:
Approach the Champions League final differently
The Champions League final is a unique championship match similar to the Super Bowl, and should be treated as such when it comes to betting. The Champions League final often features a longer break than usual for most teams, has a much bigger build-up and requires teams to play in an environment that is unlike any other in soccer.
Due to these unique factors, bettors can capitalize on opportunities they will not often get. Typically, the Bundesliga and Premier League seasons finish two weeks before the Champions League final, while La Liga and Serie A typically end the week before the Champions League. Too much rest can often be a negative and lead to a bit of rust.
Couple that with the general nerves from many players playing in the biggest match of their lives, you often get cagey first halves. Instead of getting free-flowing football, you get teams just trying to not make a mistake. The last six Champions League finals have only had a total of two goals in the first half, and one of those was a penalty for a handball just inside the box. This does not mean you should automatically bet every first half under in the Champions League final, but if you are expecting goals, live betting on the second half over is a sound strategy.
A perfect example of this is the 2018 Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid. There were four total goals scored in the match, but all came in the second half.
Know the intricacies of every match
Soccer strategy in most matches in league play is simple: Each team is always trying to win or at least get a draw. If a team is down 2-0, they will try to be more aggressive to score to get back into a match. That will not always be the case in the Champions League. Since every knockout stage matchup is a two-leg home and home aggregate score matchup, teams will have different incentives.
For example, in the 2022-2023 Champions League quarterfinal, Manchester City won the first leg 3-0 against Bayern Munich. Since they had such an advantage going into the second leg, their tactics were completely different in the second leg. Their top priority in the second leg was not winning but rather limiting scoring opportunities for Bayern Munich, and that is exactly what they did. The first half was 0-0, and Munich continually got more aggressive on the attack as the game wore on, enabling City to score on the counterattack against a Munich team fully on the attack.
If you are fully aware of these scenarios and the way teams play with leads and while trailing, you can optimize the value of your bets.
Back underdogs in the league phase wisely
One of the fun things about the new Champions League league stage is league champions from smaller countries, sometimes called minnows, getting the opportunity to play the biggest clubs in Europe. It is similar to when, in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the conference champions of smaller conferences play the top seeds in the Tournament. The big difference, though, is the minnows in the Champions League get to play a match at home, and this can make all the difference. Many of these teams play on smaller pitches in front of smaller, electric crowds, and this can be quite an adjustment for the superpowers of the Champions League. In order to get the most out of the home-field advantage, look towards the first half for your bets. Intuitively, the longer the game goes the more it favors the better, more skilled team.
Also, there is a strong correlation between a smaller side staying competitive and the under. It is hard to score goals, even for the most skilled teams, so if a less talented team can be difficult to break down, they have a chance. With soccer, because so few goals are scored, maximizing your edges is paramount.
First half bets, live bets at half, live bets in the later stages of matches are all opportunities, especially when backing less talented teams.

Signing up for a new online sportsbook account isn’t all that difficult. The following five steps will have you ready to begin making Champions League bets in under five minutes:
